Women's Soccer Draws Stockton, 2-2, for 3rd Time in Program History

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against Stockton University on Saturday, October 4 at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
In the 33rd meeting between these two teams this afternoon, the result is just the third of its kind, as NJCU's all-time record against Stockton is 0-30-3. The three ties have come in the last four seasons, and the two goals is just the fifth time NJCU has found the back of the net twice against the Ospreys.

NJCU (7-4-1, 0-2-1) took a game-high 20 shots, with 9 hitting the frame. Leading the charge was Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) with 9 shots, followed by five shots from Gineth Arias Martinez (Soacha Cundinamarca, Colombia/Institución Educativa Leon XII). In between the pipes, Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) made eight saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of play. Stockton (5-2-5, 1-0-2) secured 17 shots with 10 on net. Logan Shaw paced the Ospreys with six shots while Morgan Keil tallied seven saves.

The Gothic Knights got off to a hot start, finding the back of the net in the 7th minute of play. Isabella Ramirez (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park Memorial) picked up a loose ball inside the box and powered it to the opposite corner to give NJCU a 1-0 lead. Stockton responded with a flurry of attacks, which included a shot off of the woodwork. The constant pressure paid dividends in the 16th minute when Shaw found the back of the net. Carissa Goodwin sent in a low pass to the foot of Shaw for a low driven shot into the back of the net to knot the game at one.

As the half continued, the Gothic Knight became more aggressive offensively and tallied six shots, four of which required a save by Keil. Stockton nearly took a 2-1 lead headed into the break, however, Mannino stonewalled an attempt by Madison Bjorndahl to keep the game level at half.

The Ospreys wasted no time taking the lead when the page turned to the second half. The Ospreys needed just 9 minutes to break the deadlock and take a 2-1 lead. Makayla Jaffe scored from just outside the box on what looked like a cross that sailed over the head of Mannino and into the top left corner. Mannino was immediately called upon again as Shaw broke through the NJCU defense, but saw her two shot attempts parried by Mannino. Play continued, but neither team was able to unlock the opposing keeper until the 68th minute when Alvarenga sent a free kick into the box. With the ball bouncing around in the 18-yard box, Arias Martinez was able to pick up the ball and power it into the back of the net to bring the game level once again.

NJCU's defensive unit did its job the remainder of the game and held Stockton without a shot for the final 10 minutes of play. NJCU ramped up its offensive efforts and almost took the lead, but the shot attempt by Alvarenga was cleared away. Despite five shots over the final four minutes of play, NJCU wasn't able to find the game-winner and finished with a 2-2 draw.
