Women's Volleyball Returns to the Win Column With 3-0 Sweep of Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, NY | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's volleyball team extended its strong start to the season with a commanding straight-set victory over Brooklyn College, 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-21), on Thursday evening at the West Quad Center.

The win over the Bulldogs improves NJCU's all-time record over Brooklyn to 7-1 with seven sweeps.

The Gothic Knights (11-3) controlled the match from start to finish, hitting .183 as a team while holding Brooklyn (7-10) to a -.181 hitting percentage. NJCU finished with 33 kills, 12 service aces, and five total blocks.

Kai Fitzpatrick (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough High School) and Diane Pugay (Jersey City, N.J./Infinity Institute) powered the Gothic Knights' offense, each recording 14.0 points. Fitzpatrick tallied a team-high 13 kills and nine digs, while Pugay added nine kills, four service aces, and 11 digs. Setter Rae Marrero (Medford, NY/Patchogue Medford) directed the attack with 23 assists, three aces, and four digs, and Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) chipped in three kills and a pair of blocks. Defensively, NJCU was anchored by Pugay's 11 digs, and Brito's seven digs.

NJCU came out firing in the opening set, using seven service aces, including three from Brito and two from Pugay en route to a dominant 25-11 win.

The second set was tighter, featuring eight ties and six lead changes, but Fitzpatrick and Melanson combined for five kills down the stretch to secure the 25-20 victory. The Gothic Knights trailed 15-14 halfway through the set but responded with a 7-0 run to grab hold of the lead and never looked back.

In the third set, the Gothic Knights trailed early on, 11-9, but used a 5-1 run to flip the script in their favor. The Bulldogs would go on to tie the set twice more until a pair of kills by Fitzpatrick aided by a kill from Pugay extended NJCU's lead and sealed the win.
