Ramirez Lifts NJCU to NJAC Semifinals with 1-0 Win Over Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, NJ | The New Jersey City University women's soccer team secured a spot in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) semifinals on Saturday afternoon, earning a 1-0 road victory over Rutgers-Camden in the quarterfinal round at the Camden Athletic Complex. The win sends the Gothic Knights to the NJAC semifinal for the third straight year.

NJCU (11-6-2) out shot the Scarlet Raptors 10-9 and put nine of those attempts on frame, while goalkeeper Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township) recorded her sixth shutout of the season behind a six-save performance. Rutgers-Camden (4-8-7) managed six shots on goal but was denied at every turn by the Gothic Knights' defensive unit.

Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) led all players with five shots, including four on goal, while Sarah Reyes (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) added two attempts on target. The Gothic Knights finished the match with 14 fouls and were issued a pair of yellow cards.

The lone goal of the match came in the 39th minute. With under seven minutes remaining in the first half, Isabella Ramirez (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park Memorial) delivered what proved to be the game-winner, a long, looping strike that dropped just under the crossbar for her fifth goal of the season. NJCU carried a 1-0 lead into halftime and never relinquished it.

The Gothic Knights turned up the pressure after the break, firing seven second-half shots and earning two corner kicks, but Rutgers-Camden goalkeeper Giselle Lizardi helped keep the match within reach with seven of her eight saves coming in the final 45 minutes. NJCU's back line remained disciplined late, holding Camden to just five second-half shots and denying them on two corner attempts.
