Women's Basketball Powers Past CCNY in 40-Point Road Victory

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's basketball team earned its first victory of the 2025–26 season in dominant fashion, defeating the City College of New York (CCNY) 90–50 on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

The Gothic Knights (1–2) delivered their strongest performance of the young season on both ends of the floor, shooting an efficient 50.8% from the field (32–63), 38.5% from three-point range (10–26), and 64% from the free-throw line (16–25). Meanwhile, the Beavers (0–5) struggled offensively, finishing at 30.9% from the floor (17–55), 10% from deep (1–10), and 68.2% from the stripe (15–22). The game saw a combined 39 fouls between the two teams.

NJCU dominated on the glass, outrebounding CCNY 47–32, including a commanding 30 offensive boards. The Gothic Knights also dominated in nearly every statistical category, winning the battle in bench points (20–11), points off the bench (48–28), fastbreak points (6–2), steals (13–3), points off turnovers (27–2), points in the paint (36–24), and second-chance points (15–10). They also protected the ball more effectively, committing 11 turnovers to CCNY's 20.

Sophomore transfer Meagan Gentile made a memorable NJCU debut, posting a game-high 25 points alongside eight rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Gentile shot an efficient 50 percent from the field and was perfect at the line (5-for-5). Junior Na'tori Postell (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Arts & Science Charter) also delivered a standout performance with 24 points, a season-high seven rebounds, two steals, and two assists, while knocking down three of six attempts from beyond the arc. Junior Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added key support with a season-best 11 points, a game-high eight rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Senior point guard Bailey Cassell (Palmdale, Calif./Pete Knight) orchestrated the offense effectively, recording seven assists along with six points, a steal, and a rebound. Freshman Isabel Gidado (Fords, N.J./Colonia) contributed valuable minutes off the bench, finishing with a season-high seven points, two steals, two assists, and a block.

CCNY was led by Blessings Joseph-Pas, who totaled 12 points—eight of them coming at the free-throw line—and two rebounds. Ashley Subervi provided 11 points, six rebounds, and an assist, while Amanda Fisher added 10 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and an assist before fouling out. Joscelyn Ramos led the Beavers in playmaking with a team-high four assists, adding three points, three rebounds, and a steal.

CCNY struck first, scoring on a layup in the opening minute and converting the ensuing and-one to take an early 3–0 lead. NJCU responded quickly, as sophomore Dasani Talley Dorman (Camden, N.J./Woodbury Junior-Senior) knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game. With 5:47 remaining in the opening quarter, Jhava Wilson (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Central) gave the Gothic Knights a 9–8 advantage at the free-throw line, igniting a pivotal 15–3 run that pushed the lead to 23–11—NJCU's first double-digit margin of the night. Gentile fueled the surge with seven of the 15 points. The final 2:13 of the period saw no scoring, and NJCU closed the quarter firmly in control.

The Gothic Knights kept their foot on the gas to start the second quarter, piecing together a 9–0 run thanks to baskets by Postell, Gentile, and Gidado to extend the lead to 32–11. CCNY countered with a 6–0 sequence, but NJCU maintained a comfortable advantage, heading into halftime up by 21 after outscoring the Beavers 26–17 in the frame.

The third quarter opened with each team trading four points, but at the 8:06 mark, a layup by John sparked a decisive 14–0 NJCU run. The surge ballooned the lead to 65–32 with under five minutes left and set the tone for the remainder of the period. The Gothic Knights carried their momentum to the buzzer, finishing the quarter ahead 68–37.

In the fourth, Postell took over offensively, scoring eight consecutive points as part of an 8–0 NJCU run to stretch the lead to 39. She pushed the margin to 40 with a three-pointer at the 5:20 mark, giving NJCU an 81–40 cushion. Moments later, dual-sport senior Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) made her collegiate basketball debut and made an immediate impact, draining a three-pointer at the 4:07 mark before dishing out her first career assist on the following possession. The Gothic Knights continued to dictate play, outscoring CCNY 22–13 in the final quarter. Postell capped the night with a three-pointer in the closing seconds to seal the emphatic 90–50 victory.
