UNION, N.J. – The New Jersey City University women's basketball team dominated Kean University in NJAC play, cruising to a 74–50 victory on Saturday, Dec. 13, at Harwood Arena. The Gothic Knights improved to 4–4 overall and 3–2 in conference action, while the Cougars fell to 1–7 overall and 1–4 in the NJAC.
NJCU shot 43.5 percent (27-62) from the field, 23.8 percent (5-21) from three-point range, and 78.9 percent (15-19) from the free-throw line. Kean struggled from the field, hitting just 26.2 percent (16-61) overall and 11.1 percent (1-9) from deep, while converting 81 percent (17-21) of free throws.
The Gothic Knights held the advantage in points off turnovers (23–15) and points in the paint (40–24). Kean led in second-chance points (16–7), bench points (22–12), and fast-break points (18–9).
NJCU was led by sophomore
Meghan Gentile (Roseland, N.J./Immaculate Conception), who poured in 26 points with seven rebounds, seven steals, and three assists in 39 minutes, marking career highs in both assists and steals. Freshman
Isabel Gidado (Fords, N.J./Colonia) added a season-high 13 points with four rebounds, two steals, and an assist on 5-of-8 shooting. Junior
Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) posted 12 points, eight rebounds, and a career-high three blocks, while junior Bailey Cassel scored a season-high 10 points with six assists, two steals, and one rebound.
Kean was paced by Dacia Mack, who recorded 12 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, while Brooke Sztenderowicz added eight points and Madison Fernandez grabbed six rebounds.
NJCU quickly established control, opening the first quarter with a 7–0 run and ending it with a 22–12 lead, fueled by Gentile and Cassel. The Gothic Knights extended the margin to 36–16 with a 14–4 run in the second quarter, highlighted by sophomore
Na'tori Postell (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Arts & Science Charter) scoring six points.
In the third quarter, Gidado's layup ignited a 10–0 run capped by sophomore Dasani Talley-Dorman, putting NJCU comfortably ahead at 49–24. The Cougars could not cut the deficit below 20 points, ending the quarter at 60–39. Early in the fourth, Kean briefly reduced the lead to 19, but NJCU responded with a 7–0 run to pull away for the final 74–50 score.
Eight of NJCU's nine players scored at least one point and grabbed two or more rebounds.
