Men's Wrestling Finishes Seventh Behind Torre and Hunte Podium Performances

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team turned in a strong showing at the Bob Quade Cyclone Open on Sunday, Dec. 7, hosted by Centenary University. The Gothic Knights placed seventh out of 25 teams, highlighted by a third-place finish from senior Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) and a fourth-place podium spot from junior Simeon Hunte (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township).

Freshman Kyle Figueroa (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) (125 lbs) went 2-2 on the day, opening his tournament with an 11-8 decision. After dropping his next match, he battled through the consolation bracket and secured the first pin of his collegiate career in 2:10. His run ended in the consolation round of four.

At 133 pounds, senior Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) (12-2) continued his dominant season. He opened with a pin in 4:59 and added another fall in 2:20 during the quarterfinals.
Following a narrow semifinal loss, he advanced to the third-place bout after a medical forfeit and closed the day emphatically with a 17-1 technical fall. Torre now leads NJCU with five tech falls this season.

The 141-pound bracket featured freshman Sebastian Romero (Newark, N.J./East Side) (1-2) and senior Andy Beras (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) (5-4). Romero went 0-2, while Beras earned a commanding 18-3 technical fall to advance out of the round of 16. He dropped his quarterfinal and first consolation match, finishing the day 1-2.

Freshman Zahier Chiles (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prepratory) (165 lbs, 11-6) delivered another strong tournament performance, picking up two more technical falls—20-4 in 4:30 and 19-3 in 5:18—bringing his season total to five. He ended the day with a 2-2 record after falling in the semifinals and consolation rounds.

At 184 pounds, junior William Chrysler (Hamilton, N.J./Nottingham) (5-7) made noise in the consolation bracket, recording a lightning-fast 50-second pin in the round of 16 and adding a 5-2 decision victory in the next round to cap his day with two wins.

Junior Simeon Hunte (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township) (197 lbs, 11-6) delivered NJCU's second podium finish of the day. He opened with a 1:10 pin and added another fall in 4:14 in the quarterfinals. After a setback in the semifinals, Hunte rebounded with a 7-3 decision in the consolation semifinals before dropping a tight 4-1 decision in the third-place bout to finish fourth overall.

In the heavyweight division, senior Walter Thomas (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch Plains-Fanwood) (285 lbs) competed hard but finished 0-2.
