Men's Volleyball Cruises Past Saint Elizabeth, 3-0

MORRISTOWN, NJ - Marcus Pardasie (Paramus, N.J./Cresskill) led the Gothic Knights to a dominating, 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-22), win over Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday, February 12.

NJCU (3-5) hit .296 as a team with 41 kills led by Pardasie's 9. Alex Casais (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) paced the team with 20 assists while Faraz Bhatti (Union, N.J./Union) added 10. At the net, both Matt Peralta (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) and Nate Aguilar (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) secured three block assists. Saint Elizabeth (2-5) was held to .069 hitting as a team and tallied 27 kills in the match. Kennedy Ibezim led the team with 9 kills while Diego Rondon collected 21 assists.

The Gothic Knights quickly jumped out to a 4-2 lead behind a service ace by Peralta. NJCU continued to build on that lead and eventually extended its lead to seven behind a 5-1 run that began with a kill by Justin Walker (Paterson, N.J./Paterson Charter) and ended with a kill by Peralta. Attacking errors continued to plague Saint Elizabeth late in the set which thrust NJCU to a 1-0 lead in the match.

With the set knotted at four, the Gothic Knights broke the deadlock in the second set with a 7-0 run that was once again sparked by Walker. Saint Elizabeth clawed back into the set and trailed by three behind four straight NJCU attacking errors. The Gothic Knights bounced back, using a 4-0 run to create separation between the squads. Saint Elizabeth began to gain momentum towards the end of the set, cutting the lead down to six before NJCU slammed the door shut with a 6-1 run started by Victor De Souza (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side)

The Gothic Knights didn't waver in the third set as they used another strong opening to carry them to the win despite a late surge by Saint Elizabeth. NJCU held a 22-12 lead before Saint Elizabeth ripped off a 10-2 run, bringing them within two, 24-22. Mike McGehee (Avondale, Ariz./Agua Fria) made sure the match didn't go past three sets as he slammed an attack off of the floor to secure the three-set win.

FROM HEAD COACH CARLO EDRA
"I love competing against NJCU alumni from a coaching perspective (Daniel Crespo). St. Elizabeth has taken a massive step forward in the past couple of seasons and Coach Crespo is a major reason for that. Competing against these teams will help us come conference match time."
