Yarson Tallies Career-High 9 Ks as NJCU Dominates FDU-Florham, 10-3

MADISON, NJ - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) baseball team opened its 2025 campaign on Tuesday, February 25 with a dominant, 10-3, win over FDU-Florham. The win snaps a three-game losing streak against the Devils and marks the largest win margin for the Gothic Knights since a 10-0 win in 2015.

On the bump, Dom Yarson (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) (1-0) hurled six innings and tallied a career-high 9 strikeouts for the Gothic Knights (1-0). Offensively, the Gothic Knights were relentless, racking up 15 hits led by Arian Lunar (Caracas, Venezuela/Elizabeth), Enrique Beltra (Monroe, N.J./Ranney), Yarson, Justin Moreno (Brooklyn, N.Y./Trenton Catholic), and Chris Rosario (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick). FDU-Florham (1-2) tallied 9 hits and committed one error in the field. Rolli led the Devils with a 2-RBI homer, finishing 1-for-4 on the day.

NJCU struck first in the top of the opening frame after Lunar set the tone with an infield single. Lunar was eventually brought home via a well-placed double to center field by Garrett Allo (Monroe, N.J./East Brunswick Tech). NJCU doubled its lead in the next frame when John Abrahamsen (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) hit an RBI double to left center to plate Moreno who reached via a double of his own earlier in the inning.

The Devils knotted the game at two in the bottom of the second with a 2-RBI homer by Rolli. NJCU continued to find runs in each inning as they added another in the third behind an RBI single from Yarson. The floodgates opened in the fourth for the Gothic Knights as they scored three runs to increase their lead to 6-2. Rosario was first on the pillows when he was hit by a pitch before being followed up by a two-out single by Lunar. Allo was patient at the plate and loaded the bases when he was sent to first via a base on balls. Jeremy Ricourt (Perth Amboy, N.J./JFK Memorial) then cleared the bases with a 3-RBI double down the right-field line.

Both teams went scoreless for two innings before both teams found a run in the seventh. With a 7-3 lead, the Gothic Knights added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to secure their first win of the season.

FROM HEAD COACH JERRY SMITH
"Today was a good start to the season at a place where we haven't had much recent success. I thought the guys executed well in all phases. We won free bases, had a good mix of extra base hits and stolen bases and made some key plays at key times. We had good energy all game and we will use tomorrow to reflect, refocus, and prepare for Thursday."
