Heartbreak in Jersey City as the Men's Basketball Team Falls to Stockton Late, 73-72

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Bakhi Rogers Robinson hit a go-ahead layup with five seconds left, however, a late foul gave Stockton the win, 73-72, after EJ Matthew-Spratley went 3-for-3 from the charity stripe with 1.5 seconds on the clock.

NJCU (12-9, 7-7) shot 39.1% from the floor as a team with Avante Gilbert (Paterson, N.J./International) leading the way, shooting 8-for-14 from the field for a team-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Isaiah Johnson-Williams (Jersey City, N.J./Don Bosco) finished with 15 while Rogers Robinson added 12. Stockton (16-5, 11-3) held a large advantage in the rebound category, finishing with 49 as a team led by Jahmir Payoute's 15. Logan Mckee paced the team with 17 points and Matthews-Spratley joined the 1,000-point club with his 15 points. The win for Stockton extends the Osprey's win streak over the Gothic Knights to seven games in a row.

Through six minutes of play, the Ospreys held a 15-10 lead over the Gothic Knights and had that small margin until the 10-minute mark. There Gilbert cashed in a pair from the charity stripe to even the game at 19. Stockton quickly responded with a 15-2 run and extended its lead to 13. NJCU didn't shy away as they meticulously chipped away at the lead and used a 10-2 run highlighted by points from Hakeem Wilson (Newark, N.J./North Star Academy) and Gilbert. As the first half came to a close, Jaheim Lewis (Hillside, N.J./Hillside) converted a layup with 30 seconds left to send NJCU into the locker room with all the momentum and a one-point lead.

In the second half, the Ospreys regained the lead and held it until the 10-minute mark when Rogers Robinson tied it and eventually put NJCU with two free throws. After both teams jockeyed for the lead, NJCU came out of the dust with a five-point lead with 5:26 to go. The Gothic Knights saw their lead dwindle until Stockton took a one-point lead, 70-69, with 22 seconds remaining. A perfectly drawn-up play for Rogers Robinson created the space for him to drive to the hoop for a layup where he would also convert the and-one putting NJCU ahead 72-70 with 5 ticks to go. Matthews-Spratley sprinted up the court and was fouled, sending him to the free-throw line with 1.5 seconds left. There he converted all three to steal the game away from the Gothic Knights.
