ROCK ISLAND, ILL. - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's wrestling team had a competitive weekend at the Quad Cities DIII National Invitational at Augustana College, finishing 13th out of 30 teams with a total of 38.5 points.
Senior
Izabella Frezzo (East Rutherford, N.J./Becton Regional)Â (23-3) emerged as the standout performer for the Gothic Knights, securing a first-place finish in the 110-pound weight class. Frezzo's path to the top was nothing short of dominant. After receiving a bye in the round of 32, she went on to defeat her opponents with four consecutive technical falls, winning each match with scores of 10-0, 10-0, 13-0, and 10-0. Her flawless performance earned her a total of 26 points for NJCU, making her the top NJCU scorer of the weekend. She is the first Gothic Knight this season to break 20 wins and leads the team with 17 technical falls on the season.Â
Senior
Kayla Zeppetelli (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park) (12-8) also started strong in the 138-pound division, pinning her opponent in a swift 1:32 during the round of 32. She followed that with a 10-0 technical fall in the round of 16, advancing to the quarterfinals. However, Zeppetelli's tournament came to an unfortunate halt after being pinned in the quarterfinals. An injury prevented her from continuing in the consolation bracket, and she finished the event with 5.5 points for the team.
Junior
Fabiana Josa (Churchville, Pa./International Christian School) (12-7), competing in the 116-pound bracket, also demonstrated strong potential. She received a bye in the round of 32 and moved on to the quarterfinals with a pin in 4:49. However, she was defeated in the semifinals, and after a loss in the consolation rounds, Josa finished with a 1-2 record, earning four points for NJCU's overall score.
Freshman
Nuria Kojic (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) (10-11), wrestling in the 117-pound division, faced an early setback with a loss in the round of 32. Despite the tough start, Kojic fought back in the consolation bracket, securing a quick 1:23 pin to keep her hopes alive. She then went on to win an 11-9 decision in her next match but was ultimately eliminated after another loss, concluding her tournament with a 2-2 record and three points for the team. She leads the Gothic Knights with nine pins on the season.
Bella Serrano (Belmar, N.J./Manasquan) (9-9), another senior, faced a more challenging day in the 131-pound division, unable to secure a win and finishing the event 0-3.
After falling to an 8-2 decision in her opening match, freshman
Citaly Condado (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) (5-9) bounced back in the consolation bracket, earning a quick pin in 1:46 before following up with a 12-6 decision victory. However, her run came to an end with a loss in the next round, leaving her with a 2-2 record. Condado recorded three points, but was not listed as a scoring member for NJCU.Â
