JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's volleyball team delivered a dominant performance on Wednesday, March 19, sweeping Yeshiva in three sets, 25-11, 25-9, 25-11, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC).
This victory marked the Gothic Knights' sixth consecutive win and their fourth straight three-set sweep. NJCU's impressive play was evident across multiple areas of the game, as they hit an outstanding .437 (42-75) compared to Yeshiva's -.094 (9-64), outclassing their opponents in nearly every statistical category.
Offensively, the Gothic Knights were firing on all cylinders. They outscored Yeshiva by a wide margin, 56-15, in points, and piled up 42 kills to Yeshiva's nine. Freshman opposite
Solomon Brown (Lakewood, N.J./Lakewood) had an outstanding individual performance, registering a career-high 10 kills, two digs, and a block assist. He was complemented by two other freshmen,
Johan Vaidyan (Piscataway, N.J./Saint Joseph) and
Matthew McSorley (Colonia, NJ/Colonia), who each notched nine kills. Vaidyan also contributed two service aces and a block assist, while McSorley added four digs, three service aces, and a solo block in his collegiate debut. Both Brown and McSorley posted a game-high hitting percentage of .533.
The setters,
Faraz Bhatti (Union, N.J./Union) and
Erick Bacuilima (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen), were also pivotal to NJCU's success, with both players recording 16 assists. Bhatti contributed a kill and a solo block, while Bacuilima added three digs. Junior
Mikey Harte (New York, N.Y./St. John's Preparatory) registered season-bests, recording seven kills, six digs, and three service aces, while freshman
Robert Ayllon (Jersey City, N.J./Union City) contributed six digs and a season-high three service aces.
On the other side, the Maccabees were led by Aden Frohlich, who hit .154 (4-13) with five digs. Amiti Trabelsi set up eight kills and had a team-high two service aces. Jonathan Werta also contributed six digs, two service aces, and two kills.
NJCU set the tone early in the first set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead with Ayllon's kill and Brown's pair of successful attacks. Although Yeshiva managed to reduce the deficit to four, 10-6, following a Gothic Knight service error, NJCU quickly responded with a 5-0 run, featuring two kills by McSorley. Leading 16-9, NJCU went on a blistering 9-2 run to close the set, ending it with five consecutive points for a dominant 25-11 win. Vaidyan led the team in the first set with six kills.
In the second set, NJCU continued to control the tempo. A 7-2 run to start the set, featuring two service aces by Ayllon, gave the Gothic Knights a comfortable lead. Yeshiva tried to make a push, cutting the deficit to 8-7 with a 5-1 run, but NJCU responded with a 17-2 run to seize the set, 25-9. McSorley was the key contributor in this set, with three kills that helped propel the team to victory.
The third set saw NJCU maintain their commanding play. After holding a slight 5-4 lead, a kill from Harte sparked an impressive 11-1 run that put the Gothic Knights up 16-5. The large advantage was too much for Yeshiva to overcome, and NJCU sealed the match with another 25-11 set win to complete the sweep.
