Men’s Wrestling in 15th After Day One at NCAA DIII Region II Championships

March 01, 2025

Williamsport, Pa.  – After the first day of competition at the 2025 NCAA Division III Region II Championships, hosted by Lycoming College, the New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's wrestling team is currently in 15th place out of 19 teams. Despite the challenging day, two Gothic Knights will continue their pursuit of a top-eight finish as they advance to Day Two of the tournament on Sunday, March 2.

Freshman Dominic Terracciano (Keansburg, N.J./Keansburg) led the charge for NJCU in the 125 pound, finishing Day One with an impressive 2-1 record and scoring a total of eight points for the team. After dropping his opening round match, Terracciano showcased his resilience by bouncing back strongly in the consolation bracket. He collected two dominant pins, the first in a quick 1:07 against Christian Lievano of Cortland State and the second in an even more remarkable 22 seconds against Liam Bullock from Brockport.

Junior Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) opened his tournament in the 133-bout with a dominant 19-2 technical fall victory over Isaac Meyers from Penn State Behrend in just 6:33. However, his journey took a setback in the quarterfinals, where he was defeated. Despite this loss, Torre showed his fighting spirit by bouncing back in the consolation bracket with a 9-0 major decision victory over Danny Poggi of Oneonta State. Torre will look to build on this momentum as he returns to the mat on Day Two in hopes of advancing further in the tournament.

In the 141-pound bracket, sophomore Dean Costantino's (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) tournament run came to an end on Day One with a 2-2 record. Costantino opened his day with a tough 21-17 loss in the first round of preliminaries. However, he rebounded in his second match by securing a pin over Elmira's Selvin Maldonado in 3:51. Moving on to the consolation bracket, Costantino earned a thrilling 4-1 sudden victory decision against Josh Post from RIT. Unfortunately, his tournament concluded with a narrow 10-7 loss.

Junior Zack Vera (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) began his Day One campaign on a high note with a solid win by fall in 3:45 over Victor Hyland of Elmira in the 149-bout. After his strong start, Vera faced a setback in the quarterfinals, where he was eliminated from contention. In the consolation bracket, Vera fought hard but ultimately fell short, losing in a tight 5-4 decision.

The remaining NJCU wrestlers had a difficult day, with Mikey Cross (Union, N.J./Union City) (157 pounds), Fabian Acuna (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) (165 pounds), Diego Viera (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) (174 pounds), Jayden Reyes (Elizabeth, N.J./Alexander Hamilton) (197 pounds), and Walter Thomas () (285 pounds) all finishing their tournaments with 0-2 records.
