NJCU Baseball's Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Short Against Old Westbury

JERSEY CITY, NJ -  Despite a valiant comeback effort in the bottom of the ninth, the New Jersey City University (NJCU) baseball team fell short against Old Westbury, 17-14, on Wednesday afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

NJCU (9-5-1) scattered 20 hits and registered just one error while Old Westbury (8-5) tallied 17 hits and three errors. Brandon Piacenza (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) led the way for the Gothic Knights, going 4-for-5 with 2 RBI. Jeremy Ricourt (Perth Amboy, N.J./JFK Memorial) (3-for-5) and John Abrahamsen (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township) (3-for-4) secured three hits each while Enrique Beltra (Monroe, N.J./Ranney) paced the team with 3 RBI.

Old Westbury struck early, plating three runs in the opening frame. Brandon Piacenza (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfield) responded for the Gothic Knights, collecting an RBI to score Ricourt and cut the deficit to 3-1. NJCU tied the game at 3-3 in the third inning, courtesy of a two-RBI double by Garrett Allo (Monroe, N.J./East Brunswick Tech).

The Panthers regained control by scoring eight runs across the next three innings, extending their lead to 11-4. NJCU fought back in the seventh when Piacenza doubled to right field, advancing Allo into scoring position. Enrique Beltra (Monroe, N.J./Ranney) followed with an RBI single, and Abrahamsen added another run-scoring hit to chip away at the deficit.

The Gothic Knights continued their offensive surge in the eighth, bringing home two more runs to close the gap to 11-8. However, Old Westbury's bats exploded for six runs in the top of the ninth, giving the Panthers a commanding 17-8 advantage.

Refusing to go down quietly, NJCU mounted a furious six-run rally in the bottom of the ninth. Despite their best efforts, the Gothic Knights' comeback ultimately fell short as Old Westbury held on for the win.
