Softball Splits With Mitchell & Penn St.-Altoona

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Gothic Knights softball program continues to thrive in South Carolina, going 1-1 on the day and improving to 3-1 on the year after splitting with Michell and Penn St. - Altoona.

Game 1: Mitchell 7, NJCU 2

Leading NJCU's (2-1) offensive efforts was Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic), who went 2-for-4, including a triple that tallied the second run of the game. Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) also had an impressive performance, going 2-for-3 while Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) contributed both of NJCU's RBIs, driving in crucial runs to keep the Gothic Knights in contention. Mitchell (1-0) was led by Reynolds from the circle, tallying three strikeouts in a complete game. At the plate, DeCiccio led the team, going 3-for-4 while Whitmarsh tallied a team-high two RBI.

NJCU got on the board early in the bottom of the first inning, leveling play after Mitchell scored in the top of the frame. After Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George) reached base on an error, Villanueva then delivered an RBI single to bring home the first run for NJCU.

Mitchell opened the floodgates in the top of the second, scoring all the runs they would need to secure the win. A pair of singles ahead of a triple scored four runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, NJCU attempted a rally. Mendolla hit a lead-off triple and was quickly brought home by Villanueva, who once again came through, to cut the deficit to 6-2. However, Mitchell added an insurance run in the seventh, sealing the win.

Game 2: NJCU 7, Penn St. - Altoona 2

NJCU (3-1) used an explosive start to secure the win over PSUA to go 1-1 on the day. Olden, Villanueva, and Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional) led the Gothic Knights with two hits each with Doyle leading the charge with two RBI. In the circle, Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) secured the win, tossing a complete game with five strikeouts. PSUA (2-4) scattered six hits and three errors as a team. Storm and Lauck paced the team with one hit and one RBI.

The Gothic Knights plated four runs in the top of the first frame despite the scoring onslaught starting after two outs. Villanueva tallied the first hit of the inning and was followed by four RBI singles to put NJCU ahead. NJCU added another pair of runs in the fourth behind RBI singles from Olden and Villanueva.

Penn St. - Altoona responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, however, that's where the rally ended as NJCU secured the win.
