Men's Volleyball Falls to Rutgers-Newark in ECAC Championship

NEWARK, N.J. - The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's volleyball season officially came to a close this afternoon after falling, 3-0, to top-seeded Rutgers-Newark after reverse sweeping Hunter College, 3-2, in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament.

For their efforts, Marcus Pardasie (Paramus, N.J./Cresskill) and Matt Peralta (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) were named to the ECAC All-Tournament Team.

Match 1: NJCU 3, Hunter 2 (24-26, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-12)

NJCU (23-9) hit .120 as a team led by a .196 hit percentage by Matt Peralta (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack). Peralta also paced the team with 19 kills while Marcus Pardasie (Paramus, N.J./Cresskill) added 17 kills and 15 digs. Alex Casais (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) dished out a team-high 52 assists and Mike McGehee (Avondale, Ariz./Agua Fria) collected six total blocks, tying his career high. Anthony Matute (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Charter) kept the rallies alive with a team-high 18 digs. Hunter (18-12) was led by Kyle Foley's 14 kills and Wesley Stubbs' 22 assists.

The Gothic Knights opened the match with a 10-4 run with five different members recording a kill. The Hawks remained in the set, never letting the Gothic Knights pull too far out of reach and eventually stole the set. NJCU sat on set point, 24-22, but Hunter ripped off four straight points to win the set and go up 1-0 in the match.

In the second set, Hunter quickly overcame a 4-2 deficit and carried their lead to a 2-0 lead in the match after holding off a 3-1 run by the Gothic Knights towards the end of the set.

With their backs against the wall, the Gothic Knights battled back in the third set and used a 6-1 run in the middle of the set to take a 16-14 lead. Hunter would take a 21-20 lead but Victor De Souza (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) sparked a 5-1 run by NJCU to hold off elimination.

The fourth set looked bleak for the Gothic Knights as they trailed 13-8 but De Souza once again lifted his team up. De Souza tallied a kill that ignited an 8-0 run to catapult NJCU ahead of Hunter. The Hawks wouldn't go quietly as they came within one point, 24-23, until De Souza slammed the door shut.

NJCU carried its momentum into the fifth and final set and broke up the deadlock with a 4-0 run to put them ahead 12-9, thanks to a kill and an ace from Casais. Hunter cut the lead down to two before the hero of the game, De Souza, punched NJCU's ticket into the ECAC Championship game with a kill.

Match 2: Rutgers-Newark 3, NJCU 0 (25-14, 25-18, 25-18)

NJCU (23-10) was led by Pardasie who tallied eight kills while Casais secured 17 assists. Rutgers-Newark (24-10) ended its season on a high note with an ECAC Championship behind 9 kills from Alex Solodky and 26 assists from the ECAC Player of the Tournament, Derek Au.

The Scarlet Raiders took an early lead and never looked back as they held the Gothic Knights at bay who came into the match after going the distance with Hunter.

NJCU regained its footing in the second set and battled to an 11-11 tie behind two attacking errors by Rutgers-Newark. Just when the Gothic Knights began to gain steam, the Scarlet Raiders went on a 5-1 run to put the set out of reach and go up 2-0 in the match.

The Gothic Knights came out strong in the third set with a 5-1 lead before an 8-1 run by Rutgers-Newark propelled them into the lead, 12-10. Once again, NJCU began to close the gap but Rutgers-Newark closed out the match with an 8-3 run.
