Stockton Spoils Softball's Senior Day

JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Gothic Knights softball team fell to Stockton University in their final New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader on Sunday, April 27. Before the games, New Jersey City University honored its five seniors, Jordan Mendolla (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic), Cheyenn Fulton (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic), Jaelynn Barrios (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne), Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech), and Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic)

Game 1: Stockton 11, NJCU 0 (6 inn.)

NJCU (17-20, 2-15) was held to two hits and suffered four errors in the loss. Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland) (1-for-2) and Mya Villanueva (Jersey City, N.J./McNair Academic) (1-for-1) tallied the lone hits for the Gothic Knights. Stockton (24-13, 11-6) used 12 hits to plate 11 runs behind McKenna George's three hits and 2 RBI. Nerina Tramp (13-5) struck out seven in the complete game shutout.

Stockton's scoring began in the opening inning when they capitalized on an error to take a 2-0 lead. Villanueva singled through the left side to try to spark the Gothic Knights' offense, however, that rally came up short as Abby Castro (Clifton, N.J./Passaic County Tech) struck out looking. The Osprey's doubled their tally in the second, scoring two more runs to take a 4-0 lead.

In the fourth, Hanlon hit a lead-off single and eventually made it to third before she was caught in a pickle to end the inning. Holding a 5-0 lead, Stockton tallied six runs over the final two innings to end the game in six innings, 11-0.

Game 2: Stockton 12, NJCU 1 (5 inn.)

NJCU (17-21, 2-16) scattered two hits and tallied one error in the loss with hits by Meaghan Doyle (Hardwick, Mass./Quabbin Regional) and Alonah Olden (Lake George, N.Y./Lake George). Stockton (25-13, 12-6) plated 12 runs on 14 hits behind a stout 2-for-4, 4 RBI performance by Spencer.

Stockton opened game two in a similar fashion to game one, scoring two runs to open the game. Doyle slashed the lead in half with her team-high third homer of the season in the bottom of the second. The Gothic Knights struggled to find any more runs after that as the Osprey's scored 10 runs over the final three innings to secure the win in five innings.
