Men's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Buffalo State University, 2-0

BUFFALO, NY | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's soccer squad opened its 2025 campaign with a 2-0 loss to Buffalo State University on Friday evening.

The Gothic Knights (0-1) were held to four shots in the game, with two shots in each half. Of the four shots, the Gothic Knights put one on frame. Buffalo State University (1-0) tallied 17 shots, 9 on target, and beat Camilo Pascual Verdu twice. Pascual Verdu made a game-high seven saves in 90 minutes of action.

NJCU was under attack from the opening whistle as Buffalo State uncorked five shots in the opening 20 minutes, forcing Pascual Verdu to make two saves. Jona Caballero (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) tallied the first shot of the season for the Gothic Knights in the 38th minute, however, it sailed right of its mark and out of play. Two minutes later the Bengals opened their scoring ledger with a goal by Sam Gregson. Caballero nearly knotted the game at one before the halftime buzzer but had his shot parried away by the Bengals' netminder, Carson Smith.

Buffalo State kept the pressure on in the second half but NJCU's defense remained stout, absorbing wave after wave of attack. NJCU created two more attempts as time dwindled down but were unable to find the back of the net. The Bengals doubled their tally in the 87th minute to close out the game with a 2-0 victory.
