NJCU Men's Soccer Falters Against St. Joseph's - Long Island, 1-0

PATCHOGUE, NY | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's soccer team suffered its third loss in a row after falling to St. Joseph's University - Long Island, 1-0.

The loss to the Golden Eagles moves NJCU's all-time record to 10-2-1, ending a four-game unbeaten streak.

NJCU (0-4-1) tallied eight shots in the non-conference contest, putting three on frame, while SJU-LI (2-0) recorded 12 shots with 9 hitting their mark. Camilo Pascual Verdu made seven saves in the game, a team-high, as Erick Larrahondo (Roxbury, N.J./Roxbury), Kenneth Valladares (Union City, N.J./Union City), and JP Crespo (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) all led the team with two shots.

The Gothic Knights came out firing, tallying three shots in the first 10 minutes, two of which required a save from Adam Imran. Momentum swung in favor of the Golden Eagles after the opening flurry by the Gothic Knights, which allowed them to go on the offensive. SJU-LI tallied five shots in 15 minutes and broke the deadlock in the 36th with a goal by Jack Pulisic. Brian Ferreira (Hillside, N.J./Scholar Athletic Leadership Academy) tried to level the game for NJCU in the final moments of the first stanza, but saw his attempt stymied by Imran.

SJU-LI came out strong in the second half as they continued to pepper Pascual Verdu to the tune of three shots in 10 minutes. NJCU's offense struggled in the second half, missing the mark on all four of its attempts. The best chance for the Gothic Knights, however, came in the 78th minute when Crespo knocked his shot off the woodwork. After successfully clearing the ball, the Golden Eagles locked down defensively and held the Gothic Knights without a shot for the final 12 minutes of play to secure the win.
