Fitzpatrick’s Career Night Lifts NJCU Past Wilkes in Five Sets

JERSEY CITY, NJ | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's volleyball team remained unbeaten after a hard-fought five-set thriller over Wilkes University, 3-2 (25-15, 25-19, 21-25, 18-25, 15-9), on Thursday night at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center.

The win over Wilkes marks the second straight win over the Colonels and the second all-time.

NJCU (5-0) hit .252 as a team, tallying 62 kills, 10 service aces, and 71 digs. Kai Fitzpatrick (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough High School) turned in another standout performance with a career-high 27 kills and 17 digs. Diane Pugay (Jersey City, N.J./Infinity Institute) added 15 kills and 16 digs, while Rae Marrero (Medford, NY/Patchogue Medford) paced the offense with 46 assists, six kills, and eight digs. Brianna Melanson (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) anchored the net with four block assists, while Jenilsa Pichardo (Union City, N.J./Union City) provided three aces. Wilkes (4-3) was led by Ally Sheridan, who tallied 15 kills and four service aces, and Mia Leon, who contributed nine kills and a team-best 20 digs.

The Gothic Knights set the tone early in the first set, stringing together an 11-2 run fueled by Pugay and Fitzpatrick, who combined for eight kills during the stretch. A service ace from Pichardo and back-to-back kills from Fitzpatrick extended the lead to double digits. NJCU hit .385 as a team in the opening frame and closed out the set on kills from Marrero and Nwobu for a commanding 25-15 win.

In the second set, NJCU's offense was nearly unstoppable, hitting .542 with 15 kills. Marrero distributed the ball with ease, finding Riccio and Fitzpatrick on the outside. Pichardo's back-to-back aces helped the Knights create separation midway through, while Elisabeth Brito (Jersey City, N.J./Union City) added an ace of her own to keep momentum rolling. Fitzpatrick finished the set with six kills as NJCU held off a late Wilkes push to win 25-19 and take a 2-0 match lead.

Wilkes regrouped in the third set and took advantage of NJCU miscues. Sheridan's strong serving and attacking propelled the Colonels to a mid-set lead, and despite late kills from Melanson and Fitzpatrick, NJCU couldn't recover. Wilkes finished the set with 11 kills and five aces to win 25-21.

The Colonels carried that momentum into the fourth, jumping out to an early lead behind Leon and Sheridan. NJCU struggled to find rhythm offensively, hitting -.026 for the frame despite three service aces. A late push from Pugay closed the gap to within four, but Wilkes sealed the set 25-18 to force a decisive fifth.

In the fifth, NJCU quickly regained control. Fitzpatrick tallied a kill to spark a 5-1 start, and the Gothic Knights never looked back. Pugay and Marrero added timely points to fend off Wilkes. Wilkes stormed back late in the set with four straight points, however, kills by Marrero and Fitzpatrick sealed the win to keep their unbeaten season alive.
