Second Half Surge Powers NJCU Women's Soccer Past Manhattanville, 4-2

JERSEY CITY, NJ | A second-half offensive surge, powered by two goals from Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech), lifted the Gothic Knights past Manhattanville, 4-2, on Tuesday afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

With the victory, NJCU (3-0) stayed unbeaten, overwhelming the Valiants (0-2) with a 31-3 shot advantage. Alvarenga and Jess Digristina (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) paced the attack with six shots each, while both sides tallied four corners.

The Gothic Knights nearly broke through in the opening minutes when Digristina's strike from the right side of the box curled just wide. Manhattanville countered with a dangerous look of its own, but NJCU's defense stayed firm. The hosts kept pressing as Sophia Veloso (North Arlington, N.J./North Arlington) tried her luck from 25 yards out, sending her shot just over the bar, while Alvarenga saw a chance blocked inside the area. Off the bench, Sarah Reyes (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) nearly made an instant impact when she spun past a defender in the box and poked a shot toward goal, only to be denied by Manhattanville keeper Macey Girard.

The first half continued with chances on both ends. Manhattanville's Caela Vasilkioti slipped a ball through to Drita Tinaj, but the Gothic Knights' back line cleaned it up and quickly transitioned into another wave of attacks. NJCU nearly broke through off a corner as a flurry of shots were blocked in front, and their best opportunity of the half came with six minutes left before halftime when Arianna Chavez (Roselle Park, N.J./Academy for Allied Health Sciences) delivered a pinpoint cross to Ari Flores-Ortiz (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional), who sent her header just wide. Despite the pressure, the sides went into the break scoreless.

Halftime adjustments set the stage for a dramatic second half, as all six goals came after the restart. NJCU struck first in the 52nd minute when Gabriella Cardona (Elizabeth, N.J./Alexander Hamilton) pounced on a loose ball in the box and tapped it home for her second tally of the season. Manhattanville responded quickly, pulling level through Alessia Cioffi, and then stunned the Knights in the 63rd minute by taking a 2-1 lead after capitalizing on a defensive mishap, even while playing down a player following a second yellow card shown to Tinaj.

The Gothic Knights refused to stay down, and in the 71st minute, Alvarenga provided the equalizer in style. Off a pass from Somaia Roman (Union, N.J./Union), she unleashed a rocket from 25 yards out that soared over Girard's head and into the net to make it 2-2. NJCU kept pressing for the winner, and the breakthrough came in the 84th minute when Natalia Jaramillo (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) was fouled inside the box. Digristina calmly stepped up to the spot and buried the penalty for the 3-2 lead. Just one minute later, Chavez slipped a perfectly timed through ball to Alvarenga, who slotted home her second goal of the match to seal the 4-2 victory.

The Gothic Knights return to action on Friday, September 5, when they travel to Lynchburg, Va., to take on the University of Lynchburg at 7:00 p.m.
