Men's Soccer Falls in Final Non-Conference Tune-Up, 4-0

ABINGTON, PA | In the first-ever meeting against Penn State-Abington the New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's soccer team had its four-game unbeaten streak snapped after a 4-0 loss on Wednesday afternoon.

NJCU (3-5-2) tallied 13 shots and put six on frame in the loss led by Augusto Vieira (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and Kevin Alves (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) who put two on target apiece. Camilo Pascual Verdu made five saves in the loss. Penn State-Abington (1-5-3) picked up its first win of the season behind four goals and 20 shots. Temur Temirov led the team with a brace split between the halves.

The Nittany Lions tallied five shots in the first 20 minutes before finally breaking the defensive unit of the Gothic Knights in the 24th. Hugh Nungessor opened the scoring ledger after beating Pascual Verdu off of a pass from Frankie Rafferty. NJCU's offense came roaring back, putting three shots on goal, all three of which required a save from Brendan Werner, immediately after the goal. Unfortunately for the Gothic Knights they were not able to beat the Penn State net minder as NJCU remained down by one.

After surviving NJCU's offensive flurry, the Nittany Lions went on the offensive and broke through again for their second tally of the game via a Temirov unassisted goal.

Penn State - Abington found its third goal just 44 seconds into the second stanza to give themselves a three goal cushion. Gerard Bocanegra (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) threatened early in the second half but saw his attempt miss its mark. The Gothic Knights kept the pressure on, tallying two more shots, one from Jona Caballero (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) and another by Bocanegra, however, neither were able to pierce the defensive curtain of the Nittany Lions. Penn State - Abington would find its final tally of the game in the 77th minute off of the foot of Temirov for his second of the game. Despite a late push by the Gothic Knights they were unable to find a goal as they dropped their final non-conference tune-up before NJAC play begins on Saturday.
