LYNCHBURG, VA. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's soccer team came up short in a tightly contested 1-0 match against Roanoke College on Saturday, Sept. 6, at the University of Lynchburg.
The Maroons (2-2) managed the lone goal of the game in the seventh minute, when Ava Walker found the bottom center of the net for the early lead. Despite NJCU's push for an equalizer, the Gothic Knights (3-2) were unable to break through.
Roanoke controlled much of the offensive tempo, outshooting NJCU 15-6, including 9-2 in shots on goal, and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Lorraine Valenzuela (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) stood strong in net, recording eight saves over a full 90 minutes.
Offensively, NJCU was led by senior
Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech), who accounted for half of the team's shots and both shots on goal. Senior
Jess Digristina (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee) and junior
Joselyn Reyes (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) added two and one shots respectively. Freshman
Isabella Ramirez (Elmwood Park, N.J./Elmwood Park Memorial) and sophomore
Kyanah-Belle Jean-Louis (Montreal, Canada/Washington Township (N.J.)) played the entire match in the midfield and defense.
Alvarenga had NJCU's best chances, including a shot that hit the post early in the second half. Reyes took a last-second effort at the final horn, but Roanoke's defense held firm.
