EWING, N.J. | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) women's basketball team fell to TCNJ, 95-55, on Friday, January 17, at Packer Hall in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.
The Gothic Knights (5-8, 3-6 NJAC) shot 36.4% from the field and 27.8% from three-point range, while TCNJ shot an efficient 49.3% from the field and 46.7% from three. The Lions found their success in the paint, scoring 36 points while using their size to edge out NJCU 18-5 on second chance points.
Meghan Gentile (Roseland, N.J./Immaculate Conception) led NJCU with 17 points on 6-of-19 shooting, including three three-pointers, while adding nine rebounds and two steals in 40 minutes. Bailey Cassell (Palmdale, Calif./Pete Knight) contributed 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting, going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line, while adding three rebounds. Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) posted 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting with nine rebounds and two blocks before fouling out.
TCNJ (8-8, 7-2 NJAC) was led by Katie Fricker's 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting, including 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, while adding a game-high 14 rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Grace Kowalski also scored 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-for-4 from three-point range, while distributing eight assists. Cassidy Brown contributed 17 points, going 6-for-11 from the field and 4-for-7 from three-point range.
TCNJ took control early, using a 15-0 run to propel them into the lead, 24-9. Gentile broke the scoreless spell for the Gothic Knights with a three-point bucket to bring NJCU within 15. John converted a pair from the charity stripe as the quarter ended, however, NJCU carried a 16-point deficit into the second stanza.
TCNJ extended the lead early in the second quarter, as Kowalski hit a three-pointer from Baylock to make it 34-15. The Lions continued to pour in the points, but the Gothic Knights found their offense briefly and cut the lead down to 10. TCNJ responded with a 10-2 run to end the half and take a 54-25 lead into the break.
Out of the break, the Gothic Knights had their highest scoring quarter of the game, tallying 18 points. Dasani Talley Dorman (Camden, N.J./Woodbury Junior-Senior) brought NJCU within 21 with a jumper from inside the paint with 4:36 remaining on the clock. NJCU's offense went cold for the remainder of the quarter, scoring just two points while TCNJ extended its lead to 32.
NJCU was not able to replicate its scoring output from the third quarter as TCNJ cruised to the win on its home floor.
