JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University women's basketball team earned a 77–58 victory over Ramapo College on Wednesday, January 21, at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
The Gothic Knights improved to 6–8 overall and 4–6 in New Jersey Athletic Conference play, shooting 37.1 percent (26-for-70) from the field, 29.4 percent (10-for-34) from three-point range, and 75 percent (15-for-20) from the free-throw line. Ramapo dropped to 6–11 overall and 1–9 in conference action, shooting 37.0 percent (20-for-54) overall, 25.0 percent (2-for-8) from beyond the arc, and 69.6 percent (16-for-23) at the line.
Despite Ramapo holding advantages in several statistical categories—including bench points (15–6), points in the paint (24–18), and fast-break points (12–8)—NJCU capitalized on turnovers and second-chance opportunities. The Gothic Knights finished with a 23–11 edge in points off turnovers and an 11–7 advantage in second-chance points, which proved decisive.
Sophomore Meghan Gentile (Roseland, N.J./Immaculate Conception) led NJCU with a career-high 29 points, converting a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. She also added four rebounds, two steals, and an assist. Junior Na'tori Postell (Passaic, N.J./Passaic Arts & Science Charter) followed closely with 28 points, marking her third 20-plus point performance of the season. Postell shot 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from the field and 38.5 percent (5-for-13) from three-point range, while contributing three rebounds and three assists.
NJCU received strong performances on the boards as well. Junior Bailey Cassel recorded a career-high and game-high 11 rebounds, along with four points, three assists, and a steal. Junior Autumn John (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway) added 10 rebounds, six points, and three assists to round out a balanced team effort.
For Ramapo, Denay Jones led the way with 13 points and four rebounds. Emma Cartwright contributed 12 points and a team-high six rebounds, while Ava Burke finished with 10 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
NJCU set the tone early, building a double-digit lead late in the first quarter. With 2:34 remaining, the Gothic Knights extended their advantage to 18–8 behind nine points from Gentile. NJCU shot an efficient 50 percent (7-for-14) in the opening quarter, including 4-for-7 from three-point range.
Ramapo responded in the second quarter, opening on a 6–3 run to trim the deficit to 24–16 with just over seven minutes remaining. The Roadrunners continued to chip away, and an and-one conversion by Burke pulled Ramapo within five points, 35–30, heading into halftime.
The third quarter proved to be the turning point. Ramapo was limited to just nine points, while NJCU erupted for 24 points on 8-for-11 shooting. The Gothic Knights opened the half with an 8–0 run to extend their lead to 43–30. At the 5:11 mark, Gentile knocked down a jumper that sparked an 11–0 run, pushing NJCU's advantage to 59–37. A late Ramapo layup closed the quarter with the Gothic Knights holding a commanding 59–39 lead.
The fourth quarter was evenly contested, with Ramapo narrowly outscoring NJCU 19–18. The Roadrunners disrupted some of NJCU's momentum, forcing Cassel and freshman Isabel Gidado (Fords, N.J./Colonia) to foul out, but the deficit proved too large to overcome as the Gothic Knights secured the 19-point victory.
