HOBOKEN, N.J. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's wrestling team dropped a road dual to No. 16 Stevens Institute of Technology, 38-8, on Thursday, January 22, inside Canavan Arena.
NJCU (10-6) earned two individual victories on the night, highlighted by a technical fall at 133 pounds and an overtime decision at 149, but Stevens used a deep lineup featuring multiple ranked wrestlers to secure the dual win.
At 125 pounds, Kyle Figueroa (Tabernacle, N.J./Seneca) battled early but fell to Charlie Piccione via pin at 4:58, giving Stevens the early 6-0 advantage. NJCU quickly responded at 133, as Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) put together an explosive opening period and secured a technical fall at 2:32 to cut the deficit to 6-5.
Stevens answered at 141 with third-ranked Nico Diaz earning a 9-2 decision over Dean Constantino. The Gothic Knights stayed within striking distance at 149 pounds, where Zack Vera (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) scored a takedown and near fall in overtime to earn an 8-1 sudden-victory decision and make the score 9-8.
Momentum shifted back to the Ducks at 157, as eighth-ranked Ryan Smith recorded a technical fall at 4:33. Stevens extended the lead further at 165 pounds, where the bout was officially scored as a forfeit by NJCU, pushing the score to 20-8.
The Ducks continued to build separation in the upper weights. Ian Flanagan (174), Sawyer Pugh (184), and Noah Berlin-Langston (HWT) each earned technical fall victories, while Terrence Thomas secured an 8-5 overtime decision at 197 pounds to round out the scoring.
