JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University men's wrestling team dropped a 31-17 decision to Elizabethtown College on Senior Night Friday evening at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (JMAC).
With the loss, the Gothic Knights move to 9-5 in dual meets this season, while the Blue Jays improved to 2-1.
Elizabethtown struck first at 125 pounds, earning a technical fall to take an early 5-0 lead. NJCU quickly responded at 133 pounds as senior Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) (19-4) delivered an impressive 11-2 major decision to put the Gothic Knights on the board. Momentum continued at 141 pounds, where junior Dean Costantino (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) (14-3) secured a dominant 20-5 technical fall in 5:47 to give NJCU its first lead of the night.
Senior Zack Vera (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) (19-4) extended the advantage at 149 pounds, recording a 19-3 technical fall to push the Gothic Knights ahead 14-5. NJCU picked up its final victory of the evening at 157 pounds, where senior Andy Beras (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) (6-8) edged his opponent in a thrilling 12-11 decision.
Elizabethtown regained control of the match by winning the remaining bouts, notching technical falls at 165 and 197 pounds, pins at 174 and 184 pounds, and a major decision at heavyweight to seal the 31-17 victory.
