GRANTHAM, Pa. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) men's wrestling team competed at the Messiah University-hosted Messiah Open on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena.
Senior
Lucas Torre (Point Pleasant, N.J./Brick Memorial) (30-5) paced the Gothic Knights with a third-place finish, posting a 6-1 record on the day. He opened with a 2:19 pin (9-0) and followed with a 3:27 technical fall (16-0). After a narrow 8-7 loss in the quarterfinals, Torre battled through the consolation bracket with consecutive technical falls—6:04 (18-3) and 6:31 (24-3). A medical forfeit in his next match advanced him to the third-place bout, where he secured a 4-3 decision. It marks the second time in his career that he has placed third at a tournament.
Sophomore
Dominic Terracciano (Keansburg, N.J./Keansburg) (20-6) delivered a strong showing at 125 pounds. He opened with a 12-1 major decision and followed with a 1:44 pin (3-0) in the quarterfinals. After falling in the semifinals, he rebounded with a 2-0 decision in the consolation semifinals before finishing fourth. It is his second placing finish of the season.
At 149 pounds, senior
Zack Vera (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) (25-6) received a first-round bye and won his second-round match before claiming a 4-1 sudden victory in the quarterfinals. After dropping his semifinal and consolation semifinal bouts, he secured fifth place via forfeit—his highest finish this season.
Junior
Dean Costantino (Secaucus, N.J./Secaucus) (20-8) claimed seventh at 141 pounds with a 4-2 record. He began with a 5:22 technical fall (23-5) and a 3-2 decision before falling in the quarterfinals. Costantino rebounded with an 8-2 decision in the consolation bracket and ultimately earned seventh via default—his first placing finish this year.
Junior
Diego Viera (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) (10-19) also secured seventh place at 174 pounds, finishing 3-2. After an opening loss, he responded with an 18-13 decision and a 4:04 default win in a match tied at four. Despite another setback in consolations, Viera closed his day with a 1:43 pin (3-0) to claim his first placing finish of the season.
Seniors
Andy Beras (Bergenfield, N.J./Bergenfield) (7-14) and
Simeon Hunte (Burlington Township, N.J./Burlington Township) (17-12) went 0-2 at 157 and 197 pounds, respectively. Junior Will Chrysler (5-20) finished 0-3 at 184 pounds to place eighth, marking his first career tournament placing.
