LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team fell to the University of Pikeville, 9–0 in five innings, on Tuesday, March 10 at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
The Gothic Knights (0–7) were outhit 10–1 by the Bears (9–5) and committed two errors in the contest.
Pikeville opened the scoring in the first inning with a triple followed by a groundout to take a 1–0 lead. The Bears added three insurance runs in the second inning on four hits to extend their advantage to 4–0.
In the third inning, two hits and an NJCU error led to three more Pikeville runs, pushing the lead to 7–0. The Bears added their final two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on two hits and a groundout.
Junior Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) recorded the lone hit for the Gothic Knights, delivering a double to left-center field in the top of the fifth.
Junior Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (0–5) pitched the first two innings for NJCU, allowing six hits and four runs. Borza tossed the final two innings, surrendering five runs on four hits while striking out one batter.
For Pikeville, Shelby Ulrich pitched all five innings, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.
Addison Johnson led the Bears offensively, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs and one run scored, while also stealing two bases.
