JERSEY CITY, N.J. | Ray Gelok (Clifton, N.J./Passaic Tech) lifted the Gothic Knights past Baruch College in dramatic fashion on Tuesday afternoon, 7-6. The win marks the 9th straight over the Bearcats and third win on the year.
NJCU (3-4-1) scattered 13 hits in the win led by Gelok's three hits and two RBI. Nick Vaughn (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township) (2-for-5, 1 RBI), Frandi Yunior Mosquea Mesa (Dominican Republic/Maple Mountain UT) (2-for-4, and Shawn Kish (Fords, N.J./Woodbridge) (2-for-3) all added two hits. On the bump, Phil Kramer (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) hurled 7.1 innings before giving way to Nick Chirelli (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) (1-0) who closed the game out with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
Baruch (0-9) nearly picked up its first win this afternoon with 13 hits and two errors but ran out of steam late. Kenneth Pastrana and Sam Steinman led the team with three hits each.
The Bearcats capitalized on a pair of Gothic Knights errors in the first inning to plate three runs and seize an early 3-0 lead. Vaughn took matters into his own hands an inning later, launching a solo homer over the center field wall to trim the deficit to 3-1.
After a scoreless third, the Gothic Knights seized control in the bottom of the fourth with a trio of runs. Gelok ignited the rally with a single through the right side before a wild pitch scored Kish. Johnovan Rodriguez (Rahway, N.J./Rahway) capped the inning with an RBI single to give NJCU the lead.
Baruch knotted the game at four in the top of the fifth before both offenses went cold for two innings. The Bearcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth before the Gothic Knights surged back ahead on a Baruch error. A two-out RBI single through the left side by Joseph Bello tied the game at six, setting up the dramatic finish.
A walk and an error put two runners in scoring position for Gelok with no outs. He crushed a ball to right center to end the game with a walk-off.
