MORRISTOWN, N.J. | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball squad dropped a pair of non-conference games to St. Elizabeth on Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: St. Elizabeth 8, NJCU 0 (6 inn.)
NJCU (1-10) scattered four hits spread across four different batters. In the circle, Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) (1-3) allowed five earned runs before Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) came in relief.
St. Elizabeth (8-7) used 11 hits to score eight runs, led by Isabella Hanos. Hanos finished 4-for-4 with 4 RBI while Isabell Edwards added two hits. Kami DeGaetani (5-1) tallied one strikeout from the circle and allowed just four hits.
The Eagles plated two runs in the first behind an RBI single by Edwards, followed by an RBI double from Garcia. St. Elizabeth added three runs in the second, highlighted by a 2 RBI triple by Hanos. NJCU blanked St. Elizabeth in the third before the Eagles got back on the board in the fourth.
In the sixth, St. Elizabeth plated another pair of runs to end the game in six innings.
Game 2: St. Elizabeth 12, NJCU 5
NJCU (1-11) picked up two hits from Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland) and 3 RBI from Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan). Martin (0-7) pitched one inning and allowed five earned runs before giving way to Lopez.
The Gothic Knights stormed out to a 3-0 lead over the Eagles thanks to a 3 RBI homer by Martin. The Eagles' offense exploded for 9 runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 9-3 lead. St. Elizabeth added a trio of runs to extend its lead.
In the fourth, the Gothic Knights tried to rally with a 2 RBI single by Emma Growchowski, but NJCU's offense went dormant as St. Elizabeth held onto the win.
