Good Guy Award - Marc Brown

NJCU’s Brown to Receive MBWA ‘Good Guy’ Award

March 24, 2026

NEW YORK, N.Y. | Marc "Showbiz" Brown, the Head Men's Basketball Coach and Assistant Athletic Director at New Jersey City University, will receive the 2026 Mike Cohen "Good Guy" Award in April from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA).

Brown will be presented with the award at the 93rd MBWA All-Met Haggerty Awards dinner scheduled Thursday, April 23, at the Sleepy Hollow Hotel & Conference Center in Tarrytown, NY. The Haggerty dinner is the longest running, media-managed college basketball awards program in the United States.

The MBWA's "Good Guy" Award is named in memory of Mike Cohen, former head of sports information at NBC Sports and Manhattan College, and former publicity director at Yonkers Raceway. Cohen also was a consultant to Fordham University and operated his own public relations firm prior to his untimely passing in 1988 at the age of 44. Anyone involved in college basketball is eligible for this award; the only criteria is that they --- male or female --- be a "Good Guy."

Marc Brown certainly fulfills the criteria.

Nicknamed "Showbiz" because of his flashy, playmaking ability as a point guard in his playing days, Brown has built an accomplished resume as a college and professional player, and as a college coach. He had a stellar collegiate career at Siena, from which he graduated in 1991. He played professionally for 16 seasons at various levels and on several continents. And, in succeeding his father, Charlie Brown, at the helm, Marc has been the head men's coach at NJCU for 19 seasons (2007-08 through 2025-26), collecting several titles and amassing a 279-217 (.562 pct) won-loss record over that span.

In his four years playing at Siena, the Saints posted an 89-34 record, and notched victories in both the NIT (1988) and NCAA (1989) postseason. A two-time First Team All-MAAC selection, Brown was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference player of the year and an Associated Press All-America honorable mention as a senior. He is the school's all-time scoring leader with 2,284 points; holds numerous other program records; was inducted into the Saints Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998; and had his "No. 4" retired in 2010.

As a pro, Brown played in the Continental Basketball Association here in the U.S., as well as for top-level teams in France, Portugal, Brazil, Venezuela and Mexico.

Brown certainly had a lofty challenge when he succeeded his father. A 1965 graduate of NJCU with a Bachelor's degree, plus a Master's from the school in 1985, Charlie Brown coached in 701 games for the Gothic Knights, posting a 483-218 (.689 pct) won-loss mark. A three-time Met Basketball Writers Coach of the Year, the hardwood at NJCU is now named the Coach Charlie Brown Court.

On April 23, dad Charlie will make the "Good Guy" presentation to son Marc.

Marc Brown has collared 9 Coach of the Year designations from various organizations, including receiving such an honor from the Met Writers in 2013 and 2019. His teams have won a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference championships and qualified for the NCAA Tournament four times.

With NJCU currently undergoing a merger with Kean University and most sports being absorbed into the Kean framework, Brown and the Gothic Knights men's basketball team will continue as an independent program under the Kean Jersey City banner and as a member of the non-NCAA U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association. One of KJC's USCAA rivals will be nearby Bloomfield College.

A native of Orange, NJ, Brown was an All-State point guard at Columbia High School. He currently resides with his family in Union, NJ.
