Rosales Homers in NJAC loss to Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team dropped a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader to Ramapo College on Tuesday afternoon. In game one, the Roadrunners took down the Gothic Knights 11-2 in five innings before completing the sweep with a 9-1 five-inning victory.

Game 1: Ramapo 11, NJCU 2

NJCU (3-14, 1-2) was held to two hits in the loss. Kiara Taylor (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) finished 1-for-1 with an RBI while Emily Cammarata (Matawan , N.J./Matawan Regional) came in as a pinch hitter and picked up the second hit for the Gothic Knights. Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (1-3) got the start in the circle and lasted two innings with five hits allowed.

Ramapo (17-3, 3-0) scattered 10 hits and tallied three errors while scoring 11 runs. Hannah Hensler led the Roadrunners with three hits, while Lia Milsom added two hits. In the circle, Gabby Morgan (7-1) pitched four innings with three strikeouts.

The Roadrunners plated four runs in the bottom of the first, sparked by a Hensler RBI double. Ramapo then added a trio in the next frame, powered by a 2 RBI homer by Hensler, to increase its lead to 7-0. Another pair came across in the bottom of the third for the Roadrunners before the Gothic Knights found their first tally of the game.

In the top of the fourth, Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) capitalized on an error to reach first and also brought home Borza, who also reached on an error earlier in the inning. Taylor then plated the second run of the game for the Gothic Knights with an RBI single through the left side. Ramapo answered with two in the bottom of the frame to end the game in five innings.

Game 2: Ramapo 9, NJCU 1

NJCU (3-15, 1-3) was plagued by the error bug in game two, tallying three errors in the loss. As a team, NJCU tallied four hits with four different Gothic Knights securing a hit. Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (1-9) hurled three innings and allowed three earned runs on 9 hits.

Ramapo (18-3, 4-0) remained perfect in conference play and used 12 hits to plate 9 runs. Emily Ehrmann led the Roadrunners with two hits and 2 RBI, while Mikayla McJilton (4-1) allowed two hits with three strikeouts.

The Roadrunners opened the scoring in the second inning behind a 2 RBI triple from Ehrmann, which propelled Ramapo's offense to four runs in the frame. Ramapo matched that tally in the fourth to double its total to eight runs. The Gothic Knights broke up their scoreless drought in game two when Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) hit a solo homer to cut the lead down to seven. Ramapo would respond with a run to enact the run rule and end the game in five innings.
