LITTLE RIVER, S.C. – The New Jersey City University softball team dropped a 15–0 decision to King's (Pa.) in five innings on Sunday, March 8 at the NMB Sports Complex.
The Gothic Knights (0-3) were outhit 12-2 by the Monarchs (1-0) and committed three errors in the contest. Six of King's 15 runs were unearned.
King's opened the scoring in the first inning. After reaching base via hit-by-pitch, a Monarchs runner advanced on a stolen base and a single before scoring on a groundout to give King's a 1-0 lead.
The Monarchs extended their advantage in the second inning, stringing together five hits to plate six runs and take a 7-0 lead.
NJCU recorded its first hit of the game in the third inning when junior Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) delivered a single through the right side.
King's doubled its lead in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs on four hits while capitalizing on three NJCU errors to build a 14-0 advantage.
In the top of the fourth, junior Jaeda Figueroa (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) led off with a single to second base. Kiara Taylor (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) followed after being hit by a pitch, and the pair advanced on a steal attempt that moved Figueroa to third. Figueroa later attempted to score on a comebacker to the pitcher by Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy), but was tagged out at the plate.
The Monarchs added their final run in the bottom of the fourth on two singles to make it 15-0.
Figueroa and Borza accounted for NJCU's two hits in the contest, while Figueroa and Taylor each recorded a stolen base.
For King's, Colleen Shuler went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored, including two triples. Kara Krouse also finished 3-for-3 with four runs scored and one RBI, while Ellie Higdon added three RBIs and a double.
Junior Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) (0-2) started in the circle for NJCU, pitching two innings while allowing eight hits and 11 runs (six earned) with one strikeout. Borza worked the final two innings in relief, allowing four runs on four hits, three of them earned.
Madisyn vonFrisch (1-0) earned the win for the Monarchs, tossing five innings while allowing two hits and striking out two.
