JERSEY CITY, N.J. | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team squared off against #23 Rowan University on Saturday afternoon at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. The Gothic Knights dropped both New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games to Rowan, 19-0 and 12-0.
Game 1: Rowan 19, NJCU 0 (6 inn.)
NJCU (3-20, 1-8) suffered four errors and scattered five hits in the loss. Kiara Taylor (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) and Natalie Rosales (Union City, N.J./Jose Marti STEM Academy) finished with two hits each, while Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan) added the other. In the circle, Martin (1-11) pitched 3.2 innings and allowed six earned runs.
Rowan (22-7, 7-2) used 21 hits to plate 19 runs in the win. Emma Dobkin led the charge, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with 5 RBI. In the circle, BethAnne Doderer (12-2) hurled four innings with six strikeouts.
The Profs opened the game with three runs in the top of the first behind a 2 RBI homer by Dobkin. A pair of RBIs in the second pushed Rowan's lead out to 5-0 before another run crossed in the third. Rosales broke up the perfect game in the third with a single to right-center, but was stranded as a double play eventually ended the inning.
Taylor tried to spark the Gothic Knights' offense with a single but, much like Rosales, was stranded. Rowan later exploded for 12 runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach for the Gothic Knights.
Game 2: Rowan 12, NJCU 0 (5 inn.)
NJCU (3-21, 1-9) tallied four hits coming from four different Gothic Knights. Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) (1-5) went .2 innings before giving way to Martin, who came in to finish the game.
Rowan (23-7, 8-2) used 15 hits to score 12 runs behind a 3-for-3 outing by Zara MacNair. Emily McCutcheon (10-5) tallied three strikeouts in the circle and allowed three hits.
Mikayla Dansky hit a lead-off homer in the top of the first to quickly put the Profs ahead 1-0. Dobkin brought in another run before Carly Polsky hit the second homer of the inning to boost Rowan's lead to 4-0. Emily Andrade (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) picked up a hit in the second however, she was left on the bases.
Arianna Figueroa (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic Regional) and Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland) each recorded a hit to put themselves in scoring position, but a line out ended the inning and the rally by the Gothic Knights. Rowan plated four more runs to secure the win in five innings.
