Ogina, Henderson Lead Track & Field at New Captains Classic with Multiple Event Wins

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The New Jersey City University track and field team turned in a series of strong performances at the New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport University on April 17–18.

The Gothic Knights were led by a dominant showing from Tonna Ogina (North Brunswick, N.J./Highland Park), who captured three first-place finishes and recorded one of the top marks in Division III this season. Ogina won the high jump with a clearance of 1.58 meters, the long jump with a season-best leap of 5.39 meters, and the triple jump at 10.80 meters. Her mark in the long jump currently ranks 73rd in Division III.

Reyanna Henderson (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Two) also delivered a standout performance, sweeping both of her sprint events. She won the 200 meters in 25.56 seconds and the 400 meters in 58.02. Teammate Raven Orange (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) added a pair of runner-up finishes, placing second in the 100 meters (12.92) and 200 meters (26.06).

In the field events, Lucy Pelaez (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder) and Izabella Luna (Belleville, N.J./Belleville) each secured top-five finishes in the javelin throw. Pelaez placed fourth with a mark of 15.57 meters, while Luna followed in fifth at 14.76 meters. Pelaez also posted a career-best in the hammer throw (28.86 meters) to finish eighth, while adding 12th-place (20.97 meters) and 13th-place (8.14 meters) efforts in the discus and shot put, respectively. Luna added a season-best mark of 7.48 meters in the shot put.

Kyanah-Belle Jean-Louis (Montreal, Canada/Washington Township (N.J.)) competed in both sprint events, finishing 12th in the 100 meters (14.04) and 14th in the 200 meters (28.25). Natalie Lozano (Bronx, N.Y./Herbert H. Lehman) and Dyanne Pelaez-Ordonez (Fords, N.J./Woodbridge) each made their collegiate debuts in the 100 meters, placing 14th (14.91) and 15th (16.63), respectively.

On the men's side, Johnair Gonzalez (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) and David Dewberry (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) led the way in the jumping events with second-place finishes. Gonzalez cleared a season-best 1.66 meters in the high jump, while Dewberry recorded a mark of 13.09 meters in the triple jump. Dewberry also added a seventh-place finish in the 100 meters with a season-best time of 11.76, while Gonzalez posted a season-best 25.13 in the 200 meters.

Goncalo Carvalho (Newark, N.J./East Side) registered a top-10 finish in the 800 meters, placing 10th with a career-best time of 2:01.90. Kameron McGainey (Union, N.J./Union) also finished inside the top 10, taking ninth in the 100 meters with a season-best 11.85, and later making his debut in the 200 meters, finishing in 25.27 seconds to place 24th overall.

Anthony El Helou (Beirut, Lebanon/Kfarchima) placed 13th in the 400 meters with a time of 56.00. Thaddisen Liddell competed in both sprint events, finishing 15th in the 100 meters (12.37) and 21st in the 200 meters with a season-best 24.84. Jeremiah Saunders (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfied) rounded out the distance events for NJCU, placing 18th in the 800 meters in 2:08.66.

NJCU returns to competition on April 24, when select athletes will compete at the Penn Relays, while others travel to the TCNJ Lions Invite.
