NEWARK, N.J. | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball team split a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) doubleheader with Rutgers University-Newark on Saturday afternoon, 10-7 and 4-8.
Game 1: NJCU 10, Rutgers-Newark 7
NJCU (4-23, 2-11) used 11 hits to plate its 10 runs to snap its 11-game losing skid. Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) led the way at the plate and in the circle, pitching a complete game while finishing 2-for-4, 2 RBI. Kiara Taylor (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) (2-for-5, 2 RBI) and Emily Andrade (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) (2-for-4) each added two hits in the win.
Rutgers-Newark (8-25, 1-12) had its top five batters tally two hits each, led by Josephine Morales, who finished 2-for-2 with 4 RBI.
The Gothic Knights fell behind early, 2-0, after an error allowed a pair of runs to score. An RBI single by Taylor scored Borza to cut the lead in half, however, the Scarlet Raiders plated three runs to take a 5-1 lead. NJCU didn't back down and scored one in the fourth before exploding for five runs in the fifth, thanks to a triple by Andrade, to take a 7-5 lead.
Rutgers-Newark tied the game at seven in the bottom of the frame before NJCU plated three runs over the final two innings to secure its second conference win of the season.
Game 2: Rutgers-Newark 8, NJCU 4
NJCU (4-24, 2-12) was led by Jaeda Figueroa (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) in game two as she paced the team with two hits. Borza added another 2 RBI to her tally on her lone hit of the game.
Rutgers-Newark (9-25, 2-12) scattered 10 hits in the win, led by Kayla Cardozo, who finished 2-for-2 with 2 RBI.
The Gothic Knights took a 1-0 lead at the top of the opening frame behind a ground out by Taylor that brought home Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland). NJCU pushed its lead to 3-0 before the Scarlet Raiders added two in the bottom of the frame that ignited an 8-0 run to put them ahead, 8-3.
NJCU's offense was held to just one run for the remainder of the game as the Scarlet Raiders held onto the win.
