Softball Stumbles Against #19 Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. | The New Jersey City University (NJCU) softball program ran into No. 19 Stockton University on Saturday afternoon. The Ospreys claimed both games of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) with scores of 9-0 in game one and 6-2 in game two.

Game 1: Stockton 9, NJCU 0 (5 inn.)

NJCU (3-16, 1-4) was blanked for just the fifth time this season as they committed three errors in the field. The Gothic Knights secured three hits coming from Emily Andrade (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany), Maggie Martin (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Manasquan), and Emma Hanlon (Highland, N.Y./Highland). Danika Borza (Keyport, N.J./Keyport) (1-4) pitched three innings and allowed five earned runs on seven hits.

Stockton (19-2, 5-0) plated 9 runs on 10 hits, led by Camryn Harry, who finished 1-for-2 with 3 RBI. Maggie Formichelli was one of three Ospreys who tallied two hits in the win. Elizabeth Martin (7-1) hurled four innings and struck out five batters while allowing just one hit and one walk.

A sacrifice fly opened the scoring in game one for the Ospreys before Stockton exploded for four runs in the bottom of the second. In the second, Stockton used four hits to plate the four runs, capitalizing on an error by the Gothic Knights. Another error in the third by NJCU allowed Stockton to score another run.

Three more runs in the fourth, sparked by an RBI double by Harry, to push their lead out to 9-0 to end the game in five innings.

Game 2: Stockton 6, NJCU 2

NJCU (3-17, 1-5) was once again plagued by the error bug in game two, recording three, but plated two runs in the loss despite being held to two hits. Emma Grochowski (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) (1-for-3, 1 RBI) picked up the only RBI for the Gothic Knights, while Kiara Taylor (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) secured the other hit. Elyze Lopez (Reseda, Calif./John F. Kennedy) got the start in the circle and pitched five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits before giving way to Borza (1-5).

Stockton (20-2, 6-0) scattered 11 hits, led by Evangelina Kim, who was a perfect 3-for-3. Regan Mendick added two hits and led the team with 2 RBI. Lexi Liquori (7-0) struck out three batters and allowed just two runs in the win.

The Gothic Knights took a 2-0 lead over the Ospreys in the first inning after the bases were loaded behind a walk and two hit by pitches. Grochowski brought in Jaeda Figueroa (Jersey City, N.J./Hudson Catholic) on a fielder's choice before an error brought in Taylor.

After the two runs in the first, both offenses went dormant for four innings before Stockton scored all six of its runs in the bottom of the sixth, headlined by a homer by Liquori.
