CHESTER, PA. — The New Jersey City University track and field team closed out the regular season Monday at the Widener University Final Qualifier, using one final opportunity to chase postseason marks and tune up for the championship portion of the outdoor campaign.
The Gothic Knights turned in several strong performances on both the men's and women's sides, highlighted by top-eight finishes from Reyanna Henderson (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Two) and Pratt Charles (Jersey City, N.J./University Charter) in the 400-meter dash.
Henderson led the women's squad with a fifth-place finish in the 400m, clocking 57.66 against a competitive field. In the field events, Lucy Pelaez (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder) added a 10th-place finish in the shot put after recording a throw of 8.24 meters.
Charles paced the men's team with a seventh-place effort in the 400m, crossing the line in 48.73. Teammate Isaiah Ramirez (Edison, N.J./John P. Stevens) also competed in the event and placed 20th overall with a time of 50.47.
Rookie jumper David Dewberry (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) earned an eighth-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.12 meters before adding a 12th-place showing in the triple jump at 12.74 meters.
On the track, Kameron McGainey (Union, N.J./Union) represented the Gothic Knights in both sprint events. McGainey posted an 11.82 in the 100-meter preliminaries to finish 19th overall and later recorded a time of 24.03 in the 200m dash, placing 26th.
NJCU also saw a breakthrough performance in the men's 800m from Goncalo Carvalho (Newark, N.J./East Side), who ran a personal-best 2:01.10 to place 82nd overall. Jeremiah Saunders (Bloomfield, N.J./Bloomfied) followed with a time of 2:07.36, good for 97th place.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of Thad Liddell, Ramirez, Dewberry and McGainey closed the meet with a fifth-place finish in 44.40. The quartet competed together in the relay for the first time this season.

The qualifying Gothic Knights will next compete at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Championship on Wednesday, May 13, hosted by Ursinus College. Reyanna Henderson (Pemberton, N.J./Pemberton Two), Pratt Charles (Jersey City, N.J./University Charter), Raven Orange (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and Tonna Ogina (North Brunswick, N.J./Highland Park) have officially qualified to represent the Gothic Knights, while two additional NJCU athletes are awaiting final wild card decisions.
