Biography

For starters: Beginning his second year at NJCU after transferring from Middlesex County College…Will be an often-used reliever who will be asked to get outs in later innings.

Heaton on Espin: ““Espy” is yet another senior on our staff. He is a left-handed pitcher with a lot of poise and is very mature on the mound. His work ethic is excellent and it will carry out to the game situations. We look for Mike to come into pressure situations and throw strikes. He’s a late-inning guy who will bail us out of some tough spots this year.”

2006: Made 14 appearances (no starts) out of the bullpen as a junior, tossing 16.2 innings of ball…Had a 10.26 ERA…Allowed 19 earned runs (31 overall) and 36 hits with 11 strikeouts and 11 walks…His 14 appearances tied with three other pitchers for third on NJCU’s single-season list.

2005, Middlesex County College: No decisions as a reliever…Tossed 24.0 innings in eight games, with a 3.75 ERA…Allowed 10 earned runs (20 total) and 30 hits with five strikeouts and 10 walks.

2004, Middlesex County College: Posted a 1-0 record with a 5.19 ERA…In 8.2 innings over five games, he allowed five earned runs (11 total) and 14 hits, with four strikeouts and five walks.

High School: A June 2003 graduate of South Plainfield High School in South Plainfield, NJ…A three-sport athlete for the Tigers…Played four seasons of baseball, including one year of varsity for Coach Ray Crewiez…Also played two non-varsity seasons of football and basketball.

Espin…Born May 7, 1985 in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, New York…Parents are Susan and John Espin…Has two brothers, John (245 and Daniel (16)…Throws left-handed and is a switch hitter…Major at NJCU is undeclared…A transfer from Middlesex County College where he played two years of baseball for Coach Michael Lepore…Upon finishing his baseball career, he intends to get his degree in athletic training.
