Biography

Alvarez on Smith: Smitty” is one of our returning starting pitchers this year.  We look for this southpaw to be one of our top three starters.  He is a junior who has a lot of experience coming off of last year and we expect him to come up big.  He has come into this year in top physical condition, which along with his ability to control the strike zone better than last year should make him a force to be reckoned with in our conference this year.  I love giving the ball to a kid who has no fear!”

2009 Highlights: (3/7 vs. St. Vincent College at the Russ Matt College Invitational):  Earned the win, his first on the season...In 5.1 innings, he allowed only four runs and seven hits, with three strikeouts and two walks...(3/11 vs. Curry College at the Russ Matt College Invitational): Tossed a scoreless sixth inning, with one strikeout and one walk...(3/12 vs. Keystone College in the Russ Matt College Invitational): Fell to 1-1 on the year without allowing an earned run...In 2.2 innings he allowed seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks, but all seven runs he surrendered were directly the result of errors; he committed two of them on throwing attempts...(3/27 vs. William Paterson): Went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI...(4/8 vs. College of Staten Island): Improved to 3-1 overall, in 5.0 innings he allowed two runs and five hits with one walk...(4/18 vs. Ramapo College):  Pitched well in defeat, allowing three earned runs and only five hits in 7.0 innings, with six strikeouts and three walks...(4/24 vs. Montclair State University):  Falls to 3-3 overall, taking the loss, pitching 4.0 innings...Allowed eight runs on 11 hits with five K's and three walks...
