2009 ECAC WOMEN’S BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIP DAY 2 RECAP

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NJ…On day one of the 2009 and fifth annual Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women’s Bowling Championship on March 7 at Brunswick Zone Carolier Lanes, #2 ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University and #5 ranked Delaware State University traded the lead three times before DSU wrapped up the action with a 15-pin lead over FDU and the remainder of the 14-team field. The ECAC Championship is hosted annually by New Jersey City University.

Each school bowled six five-person traditional team games and in the standings, the Hornets (94-30), who posted a 5-1 NCAA record on the day, lead FDU, 5,954 to 5,939. DSU and FDU each led for three of the six rounds of play, The Knights (90-17) won all six matches they played.

Host NJCU improved its NCAA record to 75-28 by going 5-1 overall, and the Gothic Knights are in third place with 5,742 pins, just 212 behind the leaders. NJCU was among the top three in the standings all afternoon.

In 84 total team games, NJCU, DSU and FDU combined for the only nine games with a score of 1,000 or better. Delaware State posted the three highest team scores with games of 1094, 1032 and 1029. FDU added four games of 1,000 or better and NJCU rolled two.

Defending national champion and #4 ranked University of Maryland Eastern Shore (94-30) is fourth with 5,632 pins—110 behind NJCU, while Saint Peter's College (58-75) was undefeated in six matches and is in fifth place at 5,516.

The top four teams after the qualifying round concludes on March 8 will advance to the ECAC Semifinals. In the third and final day of the tournament, schools will wrap up the qualifying round at 9:20 a.m. with three quad-Baker total pinfall matches, leading up to the semifinal round for the top four finishers, and consolation contests for the remainder of the field.

In some of the marquee matches between clubs in the Top 10 of the Division I, II and III national poll, FDU defeated Delaware State, 1,022-960 and the Hornets stopped NJCU, 1,032-978. Meanwhile, NJCU topped Maryland Eastern Shore, 956-907.

Individually, a total of 91 bowlers competed in match action and eight averaged a 200 or better while participating in all six games played by their teams.

FDU junior Erica Perez (Carteret, NJ/Carteret), who was the #1 seed in the ECAC Singles Tournament on March 6 before losing the championship final to UMES sophomore Kristina Frahm (Oswego, IL/Oswego East), had some personal redemption. She bowled a 259 in the final match of the day and that score was the highest overall by any of the 91 keglers in the 420 total games logged. She finished the day with an average of 221.5 and a six-game pinfall of 1,329.
