New Jersey City University Saturday at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. The game was played under a steady rain.
FDU (3-2), competing in the tournament for the first time since 2004, improves to 3-0 all-time in the event, while City Tech falls to 0-4 overall. FDU held an 11-1 edge in corner kicks.
In the opening game of the Liberty Cup on September 12, host NJCU blanked the College of Staten Island, 9-0.
Four different players scored for the Devils. In the first half, FDU received tallies from freshman midfielder Manny Almieda (Elizabeth, NJ/Union Catholic), junior midfielder Matt Kinsley (Pearl River, NY/Pearl River) and freshman midfielder Joshua Corpuz (Randolph, NJ/Randolph).
Freshman defender Sean Mosser (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville War Memorial) and junior forward Duncan Swanwick (Basking Ridge, NJ/Gill St. Bernards) added first period assists.
Freshman defender Nick Maccarrone (Garfield, NJ/Paramus Catholic) scored in the second half for a 4-0 lead with senior defender Dave Rogers (North Hanover, NJ/Northern Burlington) assisting.
The Yellow Jackets lone goal was scored by sophomore midfielder Saif Algabyali (Brooklyn, NY/Azal (Yemen)) with freshman forward Vincent Mark (Brooklyn, NY/Art & Design) earning the assist.
FDU freshman keeper Tim Kirk (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) made seven saves, including a smother of a penalty kick in the 69th minute. City Tech received eight saves from freshman keeper Nelson Restrepo (Queens, NY/Aviation), and a team save from senior defender Javier Santos (Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon).
FDU got on the board at 33:16 when Almeida unleashed a shot from more than 35 yards out, in front of the midfield circle that landed in the upper right corner, for his third tally of the year.
Kinsley made it 2-0 just 57 seconds later when Mosser had a long throw in from the right sideline into the box, which was headed inside the left post from the right at 34:13. The eventual game-winner was Kinsley’s first of the year. At 36:11, Swanwick sent a thru ball onto the left of the box for a short breakaway and 1-on-1 that led to Corpuz notching his fifth goal of the year.
FDU, which outshot City Tech 22-12, including 12-3 in the first half, made it 4-0 at 67:38. On a free kick by Rogers from midfield, Maccarrone collected his first goal of his career, gathering a bouncing ball before knocking home a shot from the left side of the box.
At 82:44, Mark uncorked a shot from the close right in a 1-on-1 situation for City Tech. While the shot likely would have gone in on its own, Algabyali slid on the wet grass in the goalmouth, and redirected the shot into the left side of the net.
On day two of the tournament on September 13, FDU will meet Staten Island at 12 p.m. in the opening game before NJCU faces City Tech at 2:30 p.m. in the nightcap.
