NJCU eSports is a labor of love — a grassroots project — built from the community around us.

The Fall 2020 eSports season was a success, with the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate team taking home a championship. In order to continue to build an eSports community at NJCU, and to develop the structure necessary for a varsity-level eSports program to flourish, we are launching the NJCU eSports Gamer Group (EG2).

What is EG2?

The idea here is simple, establish a chain of communication between the gaming community at NJCU and the eSports program coaches and administrators and leadership.

EG2 will engage the casual gamers and the competitive ones by hosting game nights, tournaments and developmental days for players looking to improve.

EG2 will be a board of elected representatives who attend NJCU that represent each gaming community on campus. EG2 will have a president, appointed by the eSports administration, whose responsibility will be to organize and communicate ideas between the reps and administration. The representatives will work to build interest in their game with the goal of obtaining varsity status for their competitive players.

To gain varsity status a gaming community must have the following:
  • Student interest
  • Competitive skills
  • Leadership
  • Viable tournament options

At the end of each semester, the representatives of each gaming group will review the established criteria with the president and eSports leadership to determine the possible elevation to varsity level team status.

Perks of Varsity Level Status

  • Access to the eSports Lounge in the Gilligan Student Union Building (2nd floor)
  • Streaming assets
  • Apparel, including official NJCU eSports uniforms
  • Varsity competition against other colleges and universities

In order for varsity-level teams to remain at that level and retain resources, they must meet the requirements listed above or face relegation back to EG2 status. Proper representation in each gaming community will ensure a seat at the EG2 table and give coaches a pool of talent to for competitions.

Current Leadership and How Your Game Can Join EG2

All representative positions for the 2021-2022 academic year will be determined via a general election at the start of the Fall 2021 semester.

To start this program, anyone interested in becoming a representative of a gaming community should email njcuesports@njcu.edu. If multiple individuals want to represent the same game, members will vote. We are also looking for more representatives for the 2020-2021 academic year for other games.

The following is the inaugural EG2 leadership structure:
  • President: Diane Del Rosario
  • Vice President: Vacant
  • Call of Duty community: Muhammed Onisarotu
  • League of Legends community: Mario Elgueta
  • Super Smash Bros. Ultimate community: Chima Ogbo

Diane will be be a cornerstone of the EG2 during her time at NJCU and we look forward to seeing her leadership of the EG2 program. For information and inquiries about the EG2 you can find Diane in the NJCU Discord under the name ArtisanBagels.

If you are interested in either Call of Duty or League of Legends, please contact your game representatives above. In the NJCU Discord, contact Muhammed Onisarotu under saro2, Mario Elgueta under kpcooper and Chima Ogbo under Judex0.

It is the communities that make us who we are, and as we move forward with NJCU’s eSports program, let's all make this community something great.
