Will Alvarez joins the NJCU staff for the 2007 season as an assistant baseball coach and assistant recruiting coordinator, and will have the opportunity to bring quality student-athletes into the program, while handling the outfielders at the spacious Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
Alvarez has many years of amateur baseball coaching experience. Most recently, he was an assistant in 2006 with the Jersey Generals West, in the 17U AAU baseball league. In 2005, he was an assistant with the Central Jersey Royals in the 16U AAU league. In 1998, he was part of the coaching staff that guided Team New Jersey to the 16U AAU championship at the Junior Goodwill Games.
Alvarez also has head coaching experience from 1979-81 as mentor of the St. Adalbert’s (Elizabeth) seventh and eighth grade basketball teams which won city and county championships in all three seasons.
He is a 1975 graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in Elizabeth, NJ. As a freshman, he played one year of basketball for the only undefeated basketball team in St. Patrick’s history (25-0). His coach was Chuck Schnabel, a current scout for the Philadelphia Phillies.
When not coaching, Alvarez is a supervisor with Barnes and Nobles. He also enjoys video editing in his free time.
Born in Santa Clara, Cuba, the 50-year-old currently resides in Elizabeth, NJ with his wife, Hortensia. In addition to their son Eric, the couple has a 21-year-old daughter, Bianca Alvarez.
