ALEX MIRABEL (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson), a four-year starter for the New Jersey City University men’s basketball program at point guard, two-year co-captain, and All-New Jersey Athletic Conference selection in 2007, was named as an undergraduate assistant coach for the Gothic Knights on October 5, 2007. He is the first addition to interim head coach Marc Brown’s coaching staff, and will join veteran assistants David Fluellen and Darren Watkins.
Among the greatest point guards ever to don a uniform for the Gothic Knights, Mirabel ranks among the top five in school history in four categories. He is the program’s all-time leader in games started (98), third in minutes played (2894), fifth in assists (293) and tied for fifth in steals (167). All-time, Mirabel is also ninth in minutes average (27.3), 12th in assists average (2.8), 14th in steals average (1.6), tied for 15th in games played (106), 21st in three-pointers made (50), 23rd in free-throws made (206), 27th in rebounds (446) and 41st in points (734).
As a Second-Team All-NJAC selection as a senior in 2006-07, the quarterback of NJCU’s offense helped guide the Gothic Knights to the NJAC North Division crown with an 11-2 record, and a berth in the conference finals, finishing 19-10 overall.
He was fifth on the team in scoring at 9.8 per game (272), while leading the club in assists (105) and assists per game (3.8) with only 56 turnovers, for a 1.88 assist/turnover ratio. Mirabel set a single-season team record by playing 944 minutes and a program record 33.7 minutes per game average.
He added 5.8 rebounds (162), second among NJCU players—as a point guard—and contributed 45 steals (1.6 per game). He shot .402 from the field (88-219), .304 from three-point range (24-79) and .692 (72-104) from the line.
In the NJAC rankings, Mirabel, who played in the Jersey Shore Summer Pro League during 2007, was the conference leader in assist/turnover ratio, third in minutes (836, 33.44), sixth in assists, eighth in offensive rebounding (2.36), 14th in steals, 15th in rebounding, and 27th in scoring. He was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Albright College/Sheraton-New Year’s Tournament during the season.
After missing the entire 2004-05 season with a broken ankle and dislocated shoulder suffered in the 2004 NJAC Tournament, he recovered for s solid junior campaign in 2005-06, starting 27 of the 29 games he played, averaging 7.5 points (218), 4.7 rebounds (135), 2.62 assists (76) and 1.45 steals per game (42). In the NJAC, he ranked 13th in assists, 14th in offensive boards (2.00), 15th in steals, 19th in the NJAC in rebounding. He helped the Knights finish 20-9 and capture the ECAC Metro championship.
During his sophomore season, he was an important part of a team that eventually reached the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 with him in a cast, finishing 22-7, while winning the program’s 11th NJAC title. Before he was injured, he had a breakout season, averaging 7.1 points (157), 3.3 rebounds (72), 2.36 assists (52) and 2.00 steals per game (44) in 22 games (21 starts). He had his best percentages of his career from the field (.435, 50-115), three-point range (.320, 8-25), and free throw stripe (.742 (49-66) before the injury. In the NJAC, he was eighth in steals and ninth in free throw percentage
He started 22 of his 27 games as a freshman in 2002-03, averaging 3.2 points (87), 2.9 rebounds (77), 2.22 assists (60) and 1.33 steals (36) per contest.
