Christopher Brown enters the fifth season of his second stint and sixth year overall as an assistant men’s basketball coach at NJCU in 2013-14, continuing to bring a wealth of experience as a former Division II standout and professional player.
Brown originally served as an assistant coach for one season in 2006-07 under legendary coach Charles Brown in his final season at the helm of the program for a team that reached the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship game.
He rejoined the staff for his second stint, this time for current head coach Marc Brown, during the 2009-10 campaign, and has been a vital assistant ever since.
The 2010-11 squad captured the NJAC championship and advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The club has advanced to the post-season in each of his first five overall seasons, including ECAC tournaments in 2007, 2010, 2012 and 2013, and the Gothic Knights are a combined 83-54 (.606) overall, including a pair of 19-win campaigns.
The 6-foot-5 Brown is a 1991 graduate of Pace University where he earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management Information Systems. One of the top players in Setters history, he attended the Division II school on a full basketball scholarship, finishing his four-year career with 1,311 points, 1,001 rebounds and more than 500 assists. He helped the Setters win three consecutive ECAC championships from 1989-91, and was a two-time First-Team ECAC selection. He also earned First-Team All-MAC conference accolades during his career.
After college, Brown enjoyed a two-year professional playing career for Sangalhos in the Portuguese Basketball League (Liga Portuguesa de Basquetebol). He also played in the Jersey Shore Basketball League (JSBL) with Larson Ford, and the Celtics of the East Orange Pro League.
A 1987 graduate of Jersey City’s Hudson Catholic High School, he was a three-year varsity player for the Hawks, earning All-County and Dispatch (newspaper) All-Hudson honors.
When not coaching, Brown has worked as a quality manager for Pepsi for 13 years. Brown, 43, resides in Fords, NJ. He has two children—a son, Justin (16) and daughter, Skylar (14).
