Timothy L. Black enters his third season as the second head coach in the history of the
New Jersey City University men’s golf team in 2013-14, after serving as the only assistant coach in the program’s history during its inaugural 2010 campaign.
Black has worked to build the program during its infancy, instituting a spring season during the 2011-12 season. Two-year team co-captain
Brian Ferrante, who established the school’s individual records during his time at NJCU, earned 2013 Capital One Second-Team Academic All-America® Division III Men’s At-Large and First-Team Division III Academic All-District® 2 accolades under
Black’s mentorship, while achieving school records for lowest par round (+7) and low score (78).
Black, an avid golfer for more than 35 years and a current member of the United States Golf Association (USGA), continues to attempt to build New Jersey’s newest collegiate program into a title contender. An accomplished golfer himself,
Black once achieved a hole-in-one at the Forest Hills Golf Club.
Black, who has been a full-time employee of NJCU since 1995 as a telecommunications analyst in the Department of Information Technology, has been a contributor to the Gothic Knight athletic program for many years. In December, 2009, he was honored with the “NJCU Athletic Appreciation Award,” an annual honor bestowed upon a member of the University community as special recognition for their service to the athletics program.
In April 2010 when NJCU hosted the NCAA National Collegiate Women’s Bowling championship in North Brunswick, NJ,
Black served as a technical consultant at the off campus site and coordinated all internet requirements for the championship’s media center, working with the tournament staff to help the NCAA stream live video of all double-elimination matches for an event that was later broadcast on ESPN.
“Tim Black brings a wealth of golfing knowledge to our program, and his enthusiasm and leadership has already paid big dividends, particularly with recruiting,” noted assistant athletic director
Ken Heaton. “His keen insight and course management skills made him the obvious choice, and the NJCU athletic department looks forward to a long time partnership with Coach Black.”
Black has also coached girls’ soccer as a head and assistant coach from 1996-2009 in his hometown of Old Bridge, NJ. He possesses an ‘F’ License and has passed the Rutgers S.A.F.E.T.Y. athletic clinic. He also serves as a soccer referee in Old Bridge.
A 1978 graduate of Middlesex County Vo-Tech High School in East Brunswick, NJ,
Black, 54, resides in Old Bridge with his wife, Denise and their four children—Sandra (26), Meghan (24), Catherine (22) and Tim (18); Sandra graduated from NJCU in December, 2011. Ironically, three of his four children were born on the same day (November 29) and all four in November.
