Ashley Martinez was appointed to the role as head coach of the New Jersey City University softball program in July 2018 and is now the second-longest tenured coach in the program's 43-year history. She joined the Gothic Knights as an assistant coach in September 2017 and excelled in all aspects. A standout outfielder for Dominican College (N.Y.), Martinez is the 17th head coach in the program's history, but just the fifth to serve in the role in a full-time capacity.

Martinez took over a program that went 4-30 in 2018 and began the upward trajectory immediately. She hit the recruiting trail and began to bring in student-athletes to work toward the goal of improving the program, in addition to running practices, working one-on-one sessions and overall gameday decision-making for the team.

2024: For the third-straight season, Martinez guided her squad to double-digit victories (13) and, moreover, the most NJAC wins (4) since 2009, which led the the best finish in the conference standings (eighth) since 2008. Some highlight victories include a split with neighboring rival Stevens, the program's first win over the Ducks since 2013. The Gothic Knights also split with Rutgers-Camden for the second time in three seasons after not having defeated the Scarlet Raptors since 2009. The team also picked up its first NJAC sweep since 2012, taking two from Rutgers-Newark — NJCU is 3-1 against them the last two seasons after not winning against the Scarlet Raiders since 2014. The exclamation point came with the Green and Gold's first win over Montclair State University since 2009. Off the field, a trio of Gothic Knights earned CSC Academic All-District — Mariah Villanueva ('24), Jaelyn Barrios ('25) and Cheyenn Fulton ('25) — and seven picked up Academic All-NJAC honors.

2023: Martinez' work in establishing a path to success continued to bare fruit in her fifth season at the helm, leading the program to the most wins in a decade (15), as well as the most New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victories (2) over that same period. Finally, the team's 11 home wins tie for the third most all-time. Then-junior standout pitcher Sidnie Dabbadie continued to rack up the records, notching three no-hitters and double-digit strikeouts six times, including a program-record 13 in the season-finale. She set the single-season record for strikeouts/seven inning (8.78) and tied the record for shutouts (7), Offensively, Martinez guided the seasons of four .300-plus hitters, led by then-sophomore catcher Abby Castro's .374 average. Then-junior shortstop Emily Tunney also became the first player to get 40-plus hits (41) in a season since 2016, while then-sophomore first base Jaelynn Barrios became the first to hit double-digit doubles (10) since that same year, as well. Finally, then-junior second base/catcher Mariah Villanueva was the first player to earn Academic All-District Honors under Martinez' watch.

2022: The Gothic Knights, under Martinez guidance, nailed down their first double-digit win season (10) since 2017 as the squad continues its upward trajectory. The highlight of the season came early in the campaign when Jersey City rattled off eight straight victories and nine wins over 10 games, culminating with a 6-5 comeback victory at home over Rutgers-Camden University on Saturday, April 2, for NJCU's first NJAC win since April 29, 2017. Individually, then-sophomore pitcher Sidnie Dabbadie had a dominant season in the circle. She led the Gothic Knights with 103 strikeouts over 94.0 innings pitched and a 4.10 ERA. The California native also garnered the program's first NJAC Pitcher of the Week award (March 28, 2022) since March 15, 2010.

2021: After a disappointing and abrupt end to the 2020 campaign following just eight games down in South Carolina, the Gothic Knights returned to action for a shortened 2021 season, and Martinez helped guide NJCU to its first NJAC Tournament bid since 2000. In that First Round single-elimination game at #7-seed Rutgers-Camden on May 4, 2021, then-freshman pitcher Sam Miller tossed a gem, going 6.2 innings without allowing an earned run as NJCU just missed out on advancing in the 2-1 defeat. Then-junior Emma Herrick had a strong season offensively, finishing with a .333 average and a .422 on-base percentage. She was also named NJAC Player of the Week on May 3, 2021, after putting together a near-perfect week, going 6-for-7 with two RBI, a run, was hit three times, had a slugging percentage of .857, an OPS of 1.757 and a .900 on-base percentage.

2020: Martinez' squad traveled down to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to start the eventual-cut-short season. After winning their season-opener, 12-9, over MacMurray College (3/9), NJCU dropped five before picking up two wins on March 12, over Holy Family College (8-2) and Cazenovia College (4-3) to improve to 3-5. Unfortunately, the Gothic Knights were unable to build on that momentum as their season was cut short due to COVID-19.

2019: This was the first season for Martinez at the helm of the program and she took over with the long term goal in mind to improve the program for the future. Building on the foundation, then-sophomore Dulce Almonte had a strong season under the guidance of Martinez, leading the team in batting (.309), walks (10), on-base percentage (.391) and tied for the lead in hits (30). With Almonte, as well as then-graduating seniors Hannah Gavin and Christina Mezey laying the foundation, Martinez has the future set for success. Additionally, then-freshman Laura Ford picked up NJAC Rookie of the Week honors (3/12). Gavin joined Martinez' staff as an assistant prior to the 2020 campaign.
