Leonard Hughley begins his 17th year as NJCU's Equipment Supervisor in 2018-19. In that role he is responsible for managing all of NJCU’s equipment, uniforms, apparel and inventory for the University’s varsity and club athletic teams in his office located on the lower level of the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center. He has served the program since the Fall of 2002.
Outside of NJCU, Hughley also works as an assistant building manager at Rutgers-Newark where he helps oversee operations of The Golden Dome at night.
A former standout Gothic Knight football star and men’s basketball center, he was a two-time All-NJAC selection as a powerful 6-foot-7, 300-pound offensive lineman. He was a Second-Team All-Conference pick in 1995 and Honorable Mention choice as a senior in 1996. He never played high school football.
Following the 1996 season,
Hughley earned NFL tryouts with the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, and Dallas Cowboys.
On the basketball court,
Hughley won championships each year of his collegiate career. After graduating Weequahic High School, he attended Union County College in 1991-92, winning the Region XIX championship while helping the Owls reach the NJCAA Final Eight.
After transferring to then-Jersey City State College, he was part of three Gothic Knight teams that won back-to-back Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Division III Tournament titles under legendary coach
Charlie Brown in 1992-93 and 1993-94 before his career culminated with a New Jersey Athletic Conference crown during the 1994-95 campaign.
Hughley served as co-captain of the NJAC championship team in 1994-95, which advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
During his three-year basketball career for JCSC, the Knights were a combined 53-30 and 34-20 in the conference. Meanwhile, JCSC was 19-9 overall and 12-6 in the NJAC in back-to-back seasons in 1993-94 and 1994-95.
He earned his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from NJCU in 2016.
Hughley, 45, is married to Lorie Brown, daughter of Charlie Brown and sister of NJCU head coach
Marc Brown. The couple resides in Union, N.J.
