New Jersey City University junior forward JULIA CASERES (Union, NJ/Union) of the women's soccer team has been selected as the first NJCU Women's Athlete of the Week of the 2010-11 year. It is the seventh time in her two-year NJCU career she has received the accolade.
Caseres scored three goals and had one assist for seven points in a 1-1 week and contributed to four of the Gothic Knights five goals. Caseres moved into a tie for seventh place in New Jersey Athletic Conference history with 132 career points, netting her 55th career goal during the week (33 at NJCU). She had 17 shots in two games, including 11 on goal.
In a 3-0, season-opening shutout of Albright College at the FDU-Florham Classic on September 4, Caseres, who netted her 53rd and 54th career goals in the second half, also assisted on the game-winner for a five-point showing and had six shots, including five on goal.
In the first half (8:25), her pass set up a one-timer for a 1-0 lead. At 63:30, Caseres extended the lead to 2-0, beating three defenders before unleashing a shot into the upper 90. Caseres capped the scoring at 84:29 with an incredible rip for a 3-0 final result.
In a 3-2, double overtime loss to FDU-Florham on September 5, Caseres gave NJCU a 1-0 lead at 35:13 of the first half as she took possession of the ball, cut to the right and drove an unassisted shot into the left side of the net. She was responsible for 11 of NJCU’s 24 shots, including six on goal. It was her eighth game with double figures in shots in two seasons with the Gothic Knights.
